How to Find Whether a person is type 1 or type 2

Hello Everyone,

Would you please let me know the name of the blood test which helps you find whether the diabetes is type or type 2?

The presence of any of 4 different antibodies is type 1. You can search more on their names in the forum here. One is GAD antibody.

You get diagnosed with diabetes based on high blood sugars and this is called Type 2. What it really means is that you have “Diabetes of Unknown Type.” There are lots of specific forms of diabetes, the biggest one is Type 1 autoimmune (there are other forms of Type 1). Unfortunately many people are not properly diagnosed. Anybody diagnosed with diabetes who has reasonable health care should be given a battery of tests to diagnose potential types. The most important it to see if you have Type 1 autoimmune. Our member @Melitta has done extensive research on this topic and offers good advice on the tests that should be done to identify Type 1. In summary, the antibody tests are GAD65, ICA, IA-2 and possibly ZnT8. A c-peptide test is routinely given to gauge the amount of beta cell function that is lost. These tests are given on patients who have already been diagnosed with diabetes. Apparently some Type 2 patients do test positive for these antibodies but it remains controversial on whether these patients are actually Type 1 Autoimmune and simply misdiagnosed or whether they are false positives. Some of the ambiguity lies in the poor definition for Type 1 and Type 2.
