CONGRATULATIONS & NICE TO HEAR THAT YOU ARE WELL, RICHARD.GROWING UP NOT EATING SWEETS & JUNK FOOD & EATING A BALANCED HEALTHY DIET I THINK MIGHT ALSO HAVE HELPED KEEP US WELL.TI FOR 76 + YEARS. WOW...KEEP ON SMILING & STAY WELL.
Thanks so much, Shoshana. Your 76 + years is outstanding!! Are you going to attend the Joslin medalist meeting in May?
Congratulations!!! You are an inspiration to us all!!!
no...i wish i could
Congrats! Wondering if you believe that your A1c is directly correlated with this âmysterious inner protectionâ - have you always maintained an excellent A1c and/or fairly good blood sugars all of these years?
Wow!
You continue to amaze me!
Hello Andrea. The A1c test did not exist until 1976. My first one was in 1980. I am sure my A1c's would have been very high for 1945-1980. They were very high when that testing began and for the years 1980-1990, until I started using basal & bolus insulins along with carb counting. Despite all those years with high blood sugar I did not develop any diabetes related complications. I have to conclude that there was no correlation between my blood sugar levels and my diabetes health during those years. the mysterious "inner protection" seems to be responsible for my present day health. I will have to admit that I did start to have some neuropathy and retinopathy in the late 1990s. That is no longer bothering me now that I have eliminated the roller coaster control I was having back then. My insulin pump is responsible for that.
Hi Don, it is nice to hear from you. I remember your using pork insulin, and having so much success with it. I have seen other people asking about using it on other websites. Is it possible to get it from Canada? I hope things continue to go well for you for many years ahead. Do you have the Joslin medal? If you have the medal then you could participate in the Joslin medalist study. You could also attend the medalist meetings in Boston. The next meeting is in May, 2013. We could meet each other then if you attended.
Hi Richard,
Congratulations on 67 years with the big "D". I'll be celebrating 58 in a few months. Still feel great and can tell all that all of the complications are not due to diabetes but are due to out of control diabetes. I can't help but telling all my friends with "D" that blood sugar testing is the best friend they can have. We had to test with a few drops of water a few drops of urine and a pill. Man, blue was my favorite color.
Yes I always hated the orange color, foaming orange.
Hi Kenny, blue was my favorite color too. In the 1940s we had Benedictâs solution in a test tube, added a few drops of urine, and placed the tube in a container of water on the stove. The water was boiled and then the color observed. The Benedictâs solution was initially blue, so when it stayed blue, the urine did not contain sugar. Those days sure make me appreciate glucose meters now.
hi, richard, same w. me.testing urine...glass syringes...etc...
Shoshana, How did we survive with so little knowledge, and no devices like we have now? All that time and here we are without those dreaded complications. I bet you have thought a lot about that. Do we have good genes, or is it something else. The Joslin research team says we have some kind of inner protection, but they cannot identify what it is. I have my doubts that the mystery will ever be solved.
Richard, I am surely hoping that I have some kind of inner protection, or just really good genes. So far so good but it's only 37.5 years.
Thanks Danny!!
Clare, 37.5 years is a long time. If you do not have diabetes related complications now, then you are not likely to have them in the future if you take very good care of yourself.
Working on it every day now Richard. Am considering a CGM the new Dexcom 4th Generation one looks like it might be worthwhile. I am not yet interested in getting a pump, for me the flexibility of MDI makes life with D easier. And I enjoy scuba diving so I would not be able to do that with a pump. But I am interested in catching trends before they become hypos or hypers. So the CGM makes a lot of sense at the moment.
I hope the Dex 4G will be good for you, Clare. I would like to have one too, but Medicare does not cove CGMs.
