Diabetes is an expensive disease to manage especially without medical coverage and in the current state of affairs with insurance premiums too high for anyone to afford many a people are turning to other alternatives to manage their diabetes.
Like most myself included are pretty much ignorant of the science in the healing process in our bodies, we are told take this dosage twice a day and it will cure what ails you. We rush to the pharmacy, take the prescribed medicines and viola we feel better in the morning case closed.
For diabetics however, that morning is elongated into a lifetime of medicating, without a cure all that’s left is to treat the symptoms in hopes of staving off long term complications. Problem is the daily cost of those medications can add up to quite a large chunk of change and when you have limited or no income at all, it begins to fringe on the other aspects of your life and one is left with withering choices.
Like the choice between feeding your family or buying your diabetes supplies and yes many people have to make this impossible choice on a daily basis.
With such overwhelming odds one is left with a few outside the box options in order to make diabetes manageable, here at the poor diabetic we understand this and we are always trying to help so we came up with a few tips on how to help someone make their diabetes medicines last longer and make do.
1.Split your medicines: This happens to be the most common and popular way to stretch your medicines, it doesn’t mean cutting your doses in half however, it simply means doing a little math and here is why. When your doctor says you need 1000mg of Metformin a day, taken twice a at 500mg intervals, now a 500mg pill will cost you let say a $1. A larger dose let say a 1000mg pill will most likely cost $1.50 and not $2 so getting a prescription for the 1000mg tablet and cutting it in half will most likely save you money and stretch. Remember that not all pills can be split however, your doctor will tell you which ones can and which ones cant.
2.Natural Cures: Natural cures have been around for generations, most of our current medicines are derived from natural substances. Adding a supplement that lowers your blood sugars naturally like Fenugreek and cinnamon in your diet will reduce the dosage of regular diabetes medicines that you have to take and thus save you money.
3.Exercise: it is a proven fact that exercise has healthy beneficial effects and as an added bonus it will help in your diabetes management savings, the more you exercise, the lower the dosage for your medication you will require, so get out there and start working out.
4.Buying Generic: Generic drugs are exactly that a generic version of your prescription using the same but much cheaper ingredients, always ask your doctor if there is a generic alternative to your prescription.
5.Shop around: As with anything that we buy, you can always shop around for a cheaper alternative to your Meds to find the best deals.
6.Buy in Bulk: Medications as with anything else are cheaper if you buy them in bulk, they will not expire within a year and you can stock up and save some money in the process.
I am sure that there are other unique ways of thinking outside the box and I would love to here them when so give us your unique knowledge and we will love you for it.
