my 3year old daughter was diagnosed with T1D and returned home on 20th evening. since then, I have been giving her insulin 3-4times a day. seems like she started developing some kind of rash, which her pediatrician think it's an allergy vs. endocrinologist thinks that it could be viral in nature. I am now confused with the direction. any one experienced this kind of behavior?
btw, so far, it's developed around and close to where-ever I gave her insulin shots.
Close to where you gave her Insulin shots? Sorry, I thought that was a close up of the rash on her forehead.
Anyways, I've been using Insulin since I was age 3 also and I've had no allergies thankfully to Insulin and not to much else. Some people do however seem to have an allergy/reaction to Insulin. Since you say it's near the injection sites then that may be the answer. Her Drs. should know.
I was just commenting since in August we went to visit my Aunt and Uncle on their farm and that evening I ended up getting little bumps under the skin on my right arm. Then about 5 hours later it started to itch. I noticed that you didn't mention an itch, so it's probably not the same although it looks the same.
My Hubby gave me his Desinide ointment to try. It took some of the itching away but hours later I knew that wasn't a solution. Then I washed it off and crumbled some dry oatmeal out of a package until it was sort of powdery and rubbed it on my arm. I felt the itch relieved, so I continued using it for 2 days and the rash disappeared. The oatmeal drew it out.
Two weeks later, we went to Upper Canada Village, the farmland and village of the 1800's is represented as it was way back then. Very cool place.
We went through all the interesting buildings of old, even the stalls where the horses were and visited the animals too. Darn, if I didn't get the same rash back again only on my left arm and my left leg. So back to using the oatmeal for 2 days(3 times a day) and again it disappeared. So it's an allergy to something at the farms. I'm disappointed since we love visiting relatives at their farms.
I wish you much luck in finding out what is causing the rash on your little Girl and I do hope it is not an allergy to Insulin.
My experience with myself and my skin only... I am most likely to get a rash (either in response to an allergy or a viral/bacterial/unknown cause) on my torso, or my arms, or my legs (clearly, that doesn't leave a lot!) but those are also all the places I inject. In my case, I'm certain it was only ever a coincidence (except when the rash was an allergy to my pump sites, but that a totally different issue altogether).
If you think its directly caused by the injections, try a different brand of needle/syringe and see if that does anything. An insulin allergy is not very common when using the modern rDNA insulins (as opposed to pork/cow of the past) but I understand it would usually present in a very localized way and within a few hours if not less, so I would guess thats not whats going on. Clearly, not everyone is the same, but its pretty uncommon at least.
From the pictures on your profile page, that doesn't look like what I get as a standard allergy rash, unless its like from the laundry soap or something that I would touch all over.
Does it bother her? Is it itchy or does it just look bad? Oatmeal baths are pretty gentle and effective ways to treat a typical skin irritation/rash, so you might give that a try, but as to what causes it, my guess is if you asked 10 doctors, you'd get at least 5 answers and in the end, it probably doesn't make much difference.
Thats not very helpful, but if it were me and my skin, I'd wait it out and see what happened for a few weeks as long as it wasn't itchy or otherwise problematic. Good luck with whatever happens though, whether you find an answer, a treatment, a cause, or it just plain goes away on its own!
Thank you for your Terrie & SKYE, The photo is one of the pics I have captured yesterday and sent to her endocrinologist of all the spots on various parts of the body (certainly I have not given the shot at her fore-head :) )
She feels ichy and complained, I have used an ayurvedic soap, which I have been using since my childhood days and seems she got some instant relief from itching but still have those lumps. I'll try OATMEAL technique on her this morning and see if it takes off the lumps.
Did you apply oatmeal powder or a wet-solution of it?
Thank you very much your response.
Hi....sorry we were gone away and just arrived home.
No, I didn't think that you gave her an injection near her forehead. :)
No, I don't wet the oatmeal. I either use the plain oatmeal in the bag that you cook on the stove or the oatmeal packets with the sugar and flavouring that my Hubby likes.
I wash/dry my hands, empty one of the packets on a strainer and shake out as much sugar and other flavourings that I can. Then I take it and crumble some quickly in my hands(or use a mini food processor) and dump it into a bowl. Then I take it and rub it on my rash firmly and brush the excess away with my hand or light brush. It draws out the liquid in the bumps and dries them out. I think the salt in the packets helps also.
Of course, you will have to put your Daughter's forehead toward the floor, so she doesn't get it in her eyes. Then brush away the excess. It doesn't look "cool" but 2 or 3 times a day for 2 days will tell you, if it works for her rash. If it isn't a solution then a Dermatologist may be necessary. I was just happy that I didn't need more medications.
Oh and I found out that when I was about 20 that I was allergic to cats. :( I used to get red patches on my face from them. So from then on, I became a dog and rabbit person.
It looks a bit like an allergic reaction to perfume in soap or talc, even laundry powder can cause a rash. Have you changed anything lately? Change the way you wash her to using a non-soap liquid and see if that helps. The detergent in some bubble baths is very irritating.
Thank you for your response Terrie,
I gave her an oat-meal bath in her play tub and she loved it :)
btw, I made a visit to another dr., who said this as SCABIES symptoms and suspected that my kid might have got it from the hospital (suspected that, it could be the previous patient may have had it) as it was the only change to my kid's life so far.
last night I have applied the medication they prescribed, hopefully I'll figureout if the rash stopped spreading on her body.
anyway, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and helping me to give some happy moments in a day for my kid. (she is getting used to her daily insulin shots :)
You're Welcome! I am just smiling picturing your Daughter having a oatmeal bath :D Yuk! LOL! It was Skye that mentioned the oatmeal bath however. I used the dry oatmeal for my rash.
That's interesting. I'm surprised she was dxd. with Scabies. I've never known anyone to have that, so I read up on it. Mine is definitely an allergy to something on a farm since I got it both times I was there, then I used the dry oatmeal and it disappeared in 2 days. Haven't had it since thankfully.
I'm relieved to hear that your Daughter is getting used to the injections. What a brave little Girl! I still remember my first shot. Total shock and disbelief and tears, as I looked accusingly at my Mom(Poor her). As time passed it became routine.
Good Luck to your little One for good health and mostly happy times in life. The best to you and your Wife also.
