Are you an athlete? Want to become one? Introduce yourself!

That’s awesome, Jeff! Your comment made me wonder whether anyone on this list is planning to run the 1/2 marathon in Vegas on Dec. 5? (It’s the Rock & Roll marathon and half marathon.) ALSO, are there any diabetic runners out there in the St. Louis region who like to train in Forest Park and need a running partner? I’m not horribly fast, but I’m dedicated (e.g., my goal for Vegas half is to break the 2 hour mark).

I am! I am! I am! It’s my first. (the Las Vegas half) My goal is to… finish without keeling over. LOL.

I almost signed up for the Vegas Marathon, but chose to register for CIM in Sacramento that same day. I’ll be hosting a casual run through Triabetes/ Insulindependence on November 27th in Los Angeles. I’ll post when the details are set. Good luck!

Not keeling over is always a good goal! You’ll do great. So, if you see someone wearing an “I Run on Insulin” shirt, it might be me.

Thanks, Christian! I’m looking forward to it. All of the others I’ve done have been in the Midwest, so it’s nice to venture out. And, not that I’m a Poison fan, but having Bret Michaels as the headliner is really cool. Good luck with the CIM! I’m in awe of anyone who can do a full marathon.

I’m hoping to be out in vegas for the1/2… Just waiting to see if hubby can get the time off of work. I hear you about Bret Michaels. It’ll be my first 1/2 also, I just want to still like running when I’m done.

Here’s the registration link (it’s free) for November’s Los Angeles Triabetes Dawn Phenomenon. We will be walking and running anywhere from 1 - 7.5 miles on a flat woodchip trail in Manhattan Beach on November 27th starting at 9AM. Snacks provided coutesy of Insulindependence/Triabetes. https://www.z2systems.com/np/clients/insulindependence/event.jsp?event=449

Hey, my Tu Diabetes friends…my girlfriend has Type 1 diabetes, so I just started a campaign called ‘Run To Stop Diabetes’. Visit www.RunToStopDiabetes.com for more info on the campaign & let me know what you think!! We’re running the 2011 ING NYC Marathon to raise money & awareness for diabetes.

There are a number of people in this group who are familiar with the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA). DESA is doing a survey according to Doug Dressman the Executive Director and asked if the members would distribute the survey to other people who are doing exercise and sports as part of their diabetes management program. Here is the email that I got.

The link below is for a market research survey regarding the services provided
by DESA and has been authorized by the DESA Board of Directors.

Please take a moment to complete the survey yourself. I would also like for you
to distribute it to your contacts and colleagues in the diabetes community.

The survey is also posted on the web site and will be distributed via various
means over the next 5-10 days.

Thanks,

Doug

Thanks Florian.
Only people in the USA can take the survey?

The Vegas Rock & Roll 1/2 marathon was SO much fun! Even with shin splints. :) Didn't break the 2hr mark because of the leg pain, but still got 2:04:36. AND we got to hear Bret Michaels after. (He's the tiny speck with the cowboy hat in the photo...of course.)

Anyone have experience with calf/muscle strains? I've been struggling with calf strains of the soleus ever since I was diagnosed a few years ago. I've seen chiropractors and currently have been working with a trainer for about a year now. He thinks its from the calves taking over from "too tight" quads and glutes/hamstrings not firing.

He's have me on roller therapy for a several weeks now and asked how much caffeine I'm taking on a daily basis. I admit, I drink diet soda and rockstar energy drinks daily. He wants me completely off it if and says with being a type 1 that is dehydrating me causing strains on my calves when I play soccer. Wants me completely off it.

Anyone have experience with high caffeine content and muscle strains? I know I don't drink enough water, but also curious about the effects being type 1, exercising twice a day, being dehydrated, and consuming a lot of caffeine and diet drinks...

thx

Anyone have experience with endurance races? 24 hour mtb solo race in particular?

Thx

Timber, haven’t done 24 hours, but my longest day of cycling was 147 miles over 12 hours (including rest stops). I don’t do anything too tricky, just put the basal down to -90% or -80% for the day, and eat some good food throughout the day. I usually pack some dense carbs to munch on when I get a chance, and refuel at convenience stores along the way.

The longest days I’ve had on the move been a couple of 9 hour bike rides, 7 hour run, and a 6 hour 1/2 ironman triathlon. I’ve been practicing endurance sports for about two years (been diabetic for 8 years) and discovered that I am best off not lowering my basal rates too much (sometimes not at all). Like Andy said, the key is consuming calories and carbs throughout the effort. I normally don’t bolus while exercising. This has worked for me during exercise, but I do often go low AFTER these workouts. I will be experimenting with post-exercise reduced basal rates during the next few months in training for my first ironman coming up in May.

Good luck in your 24 hour race. Which one are you doing? Leadville?

Michael,

When my son switched from Levemir to around the clock Apidra in the Pod we experienced some of this. A marathon runner (also a doctor) on one forum told us that she was having more deficiencies in minerals due to the Apidra. She had actually returned to MDI around the time for some races.

You might have a doctor run some detailed tests or just make sure you are taking a drink, specific food or vitamin daily that will replace magnesium, potassium, etc. and see if your symptoms improve. (Diet sodas are known to deplete your magnesium - I know I am addicted to them also. But, I need the caffeine even more now that I am always up in the middle of the night checking on my son after hockey).

Does anyone else think it would be useful to have an FAQ here?
It seems like a lot of the comments and discussions are repeats of others.
At the very least, we could use a list like these are good books on the subject, these are good web sites, etc.

Jerry,
That would be a great idea. I am always looking for information, and seem to get lost.

I agree that a faq would be useful, maybe a sticky thread or something like that?

are there many triathletes here? I have had diabetes for almost 30 years now and last year just started attempting triathlons. I would love to hear any ones commets on how to stabalize a the blood sugars for these races. I am fine during training but when you put them all together my blood sugar plumits. Also any tips from diabetic/MS people would be helpful as well… I was diagnosised with MS six years ago…
