what kind of tasty seasoning or spices can I put in a root vegetable soup (e.g., potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes) other than salt, pepper, garlic, or onion (powder or real)?

Rosemary! I add that to my soups and it adds a lot of taste! Cracked peppercorn in another one I use too. A little different tasting that black pepper.

I use basil a lot and I have experimented with nutmeg as well .I try to stay away from salt
