Avandia acces significantly restricted in the US by FDA

Let us know how it goes Gail. My Rheumy phoned me to tell me to stop taking Vioxx the next morning after it was announced that Vioxx caused heart attacks and strokes for many Patients.

Gail , I recall this being in the Canadian news this summer ; maybe someone can direct ? I believe, that the CDA mentioned to check with your Dr. as well before making any changes to your treatment and that the Medical Staff has been advised .
I have some friends with type 2 diabetes and will check with them , what they have been advised .

What is it about the drug that causes the problems? Can anyone explain in mostly non-MedicalDegree terms?

I wonder if they could modify the drug a bit to remove the side effects?

Richard

I don’t know where to start considering my on and off nature on this forum (busy busy busy) and the probability of discussions on the subject I have not seen, but do we have other people on these forums who have suffered a stroke while on Avandia? My wife had a minor one from which she recovered fairly quickly except for some movement in her left hand.

So… here we are one year later… and it seems to be getting worse. Actos, Victoza, Byetta, Januvia, all the sulfs… all with serious risks. Why do so many still find themselves in a position where they must beg to be taken off these drugs?

I suspect that the profit motive is still searching for the “Quick fix” medication. Anyone who comes up with that stqands to make multiple fortunes. Drugs with known side effects will drop by the wayside, as will older drugs that cost more than the basic ones do. I’m not sure, because i haven’t looked recently, but it’s worth checking out the side effects data on the glitazones. I think they might be quite risky things to use. Metformin is apparently a safe drug and even it, in cases of kidney disease, is suspect.
the only safe way to handle T2 is to low carb. they keep warning us against that tactic, but no-one has given any evidence; and of course there’s little profit in it for anyone other than the patients.
