Basic/Stupid Questions about BG

  1. Should I be worried with a one hour postprandial reading of over 11? My doctor said I shouldn’t, but I felt like hell.
  2. I feel bad whenever my BG goes over 8. Am I alone in this?
  3. Does 3.9 count as hypoglycemia? My first dietitian and doc said anything under 4 was hypo, the second dietitian said 3.3-3.6 was normal and I shouldn’t worry about it.
  4. What is a good average BG reading? According to Sugar Stats, my average daily BG is about 5.7 - although yesterday it was 6.6. I think this is too high. Am I wrong?
  5. I hardly ever have readings lower than 5.5, unless they’re hypo. I would like to have lower readings, in the range of 4.5-5 more regularly. Am I expecting too much by wanting to get into this range?

My goal range for blood sugars is 3.9-8.3 mmol/L. 3.9 is borderline hypo, but I do not think that 3.3-3.6 is normal-- that is low! I agree that I feel lousy with postprandials over 11, options to bring them down are to eat less carbs or to do a bit of exercise (like a walk) after you eat.

I think that research shows that it is blood sugars over 8.3 that can cause damage. But people with diabetes have much lower levels most of the time (between 4-6). So it’s good to aim for those, but I think that you should also feel good about readings under 8. That’s my thought!

Megan— I just copy and paste your post including the mg/dl numbers that are used in the USA-- that way more people can give you comments!

4) What is a good average BG reading? According to Sugar Stats, my average daily BG is about 102 - although yesterday it was 118. I think this is too high. Am I wrong?
5) I hardly ever have readings lower than 100, unless they’re hypo. I would like to have lower readings, in the range of 80-90 more regularly. Am I expecting too much by wanting to get into this range?”
