This is off topic, but I come from a family where the women are traditionally 5'8" - 5'10" and the men 6'4" - 6'7". My husband is 6'6". I'm the "weed" amongst the redwoods.
I should have clarified, I hadn't been to Europe during the mad cow disease scare. My international travel hasn't stopped me from donating.
I wish I could! I looked into it because I would love to donate, but here in Canada people with diabetes are not allowed to donate if they use insulin. :(
I don't think I would want to be tall myself... I like my height just fine, and you have less distance to fall etc. lol
My very best new word of the Blammo I love it. My vocabulary has increased.
Bummer. I've always thought that my type 1 blood was like premium gasoline!
I've heard that A1c does decrease from blood donation--at least for a few weeks. Apparently when your body makes tons of new red cells they dilute the population of cells that already exists and your A1c therefore appears lower. You can always try it the next time you know you're going to the endo to see what happens!
That is exactly what happens. Your A1C is "artificially" lowered. Since an A1C is a measure of glycosylation over months once 10% of your total blood volume is removed your body has to replace it with new "un-glycosylated" blood.
Has anyone noticed crazy blood sugar swings and high numbers after donating blood? I donated last night and my blood sugars have been awful ever since.
The first time I donated blood back in November my blood sugars skyrocketed for no apparent reason. The second time I donated in late January nothing weird happened and my blood sugars were normal. So I have no idea what happened or what was different between the first and second times. I'll be going back next month to donate again and see what happens then.
I am type one diabetic. I do a double red blood cell donation every 4 months and have been doing it for like 7-9 years. I am 45. I am on an insulin pump and am O Neg. There should be no reason you can’t donate blood in the US with the Red Cross.
I will say that I have not done whole blood donations since 1987 when I was in high school, right before i was diagnosed. I assumed for years I couldn’t donate and then just looked into it back in like 2006/2008 (I forget exactly when) on a whim.
I went to donate whole blood and then found out they have a very big need for double red donations. It takes 2-x longer to donate, but you don’t lose any fluid at the end of the day, so risk to hypoglycemia is lower/nonexistent as a result of the donation. Plus you only can do it every 4 months.
And they really need the double red donations. there are weight requirements and iron requirements, but if you meet the requirements, do a double red. If you don’t , then do a whole blood. “talk to your doctor”, but you can do it. Call the red cross too. Good luck and thanks for donating.
