It has been a long time since i posted. This is a great place to get some advice so here I am. I have been experiencing my blood sugar spike to the low 200s right after eating. My pump shows lots of insulin and i know it will eventualkly come back down on its own. Obviously i dont want it going that high to begin with. i am also newly pregnant and have a good reason to fix this fast.
Any ideas on what i need to change. I dont necessarily need a lot more insulin as I have enough, but why the sudden spike then drop…Maybe more basal? I have experienced this with ligher and heavier meals. i guess the meal could be doing it…but still i want to figure this out. i dont see my edocrinologist for a couple of weeks and the pernatologist i have will see me in about a month. He is great and i know he would have the answer immediately. However i dont have him in my back pocket.
Candace, as a pumper and NOT pregnant ( after all …I am close to 69 !!) …are you doing this already OR have you tried delivering your bolus about 15 min.or more prior to your meal ? You may need to experiment .
Wish you a healthy pregnancy !!
Even though you don’t see your endocrinologist for a few more weeks, I would still advise you to contact him and maybe send in a week of blood sugars. That way, he can see the situation that you’ve described and then recommend the best solution for you. As you’ve said, it’s very important to maintain good control of BG levels during pregnancy. Have you tried using a CGM? Your doctor might be able to set you up with a 3-day trial of a CGM and that would give both of you a lot more information on what’s actually happening with your blood sugars throughout the day and night.
The high spike in BG levels right after eating can be due to many things. Anything from a low blood sugar sometime before the meal to the type of food you’ve just eaten, especially if the food is high-glycemic. But your doctor is the best one to help you determine the cause and figure out how to fix it.
I will call the doc tomorrow. I read in another reply to try Symlin. I brought this up with the docs before getting pregnant and unfortunately there is no research that shows it is safe during pregnancy. i plan to try it after though. I have been fighting insurance for a CGM and was denied. i appealed and was denied again. So we will see.
I probably need to watchthe food. the early stages of pregnancy are hard.
I have heard that during pregnancy you do require more insulin, I read something that you sometimes will double your insulin needs by the end of pregnancy, but should go back to normal after delivery, definatly call your endo, thye will tell you what you need, good luck, hope pregnancy suits you well
