Am not often on tudiabetes, but joined last year. Found your questions very interesting. I’ve been a Type 1 for 30 years – see my endo June 18 (see him once a year–have excellent control; last A1C was 5.2) and am anxious to ask about this c peptides stuff. Often I find myself thinking I know everything but now this is new to me! Sincere congratulations on bringing your A1C down so dramatically! Started using a pump a year ago so I’m very anxious to see what my latest A1C is now. Blessings to you!
I am finding this thread very interesting too. The C-peptide thing is not somethng you really get explained to you. I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and all the doctor told me was that we test you pancreas to see if you need insulin or not. Than he explained that my C-peptide was 12 (he showed me the labs). He never actually said “You are a Type 2” but someone on here said if my c-peptide is a 12 than I am type 2.
But I am curious about what Krisiten said that your c-peptide will go down with time. Does this happen for ALL diabetics or just Type 1s in that range ? It sounds like if you are within a certain range you are most definately considered a Type 1 and if you are above that range you are considered a Type 2. Don’t want to hijack the thread too much -but if there is a good book to read on the subject to recommend that would be good or a website.
Also, Tim G, AaronM is very correct. Not all Type 2’s are overweight. In fact some are very skinny. I have been skinny all my life and I weighed 130 when I diagnosed (I’m 5’4") 3 months ago and I have lost over 20 pounds since then because of doing low carb. So it is definately important to bury that myth that Type 2’s are all overweight because it definatley is not true. I was told by a D expert that it is being realized that is their are alot more genetic Type 2’s out there than they realized before.
I also support what Aaron said about how individual we all are. I read one book that said that there are probably actually 100 of 1000 of ACTUAL TYPES of diabetes but in order to make it easier - doctors like to lump everyone into one or two categories for the most part - probably part of the problem in treating people properly too. There are so many factors involved it could take forever for them to figure it out. But maybe they are too lazy or it is too expensive to figure out all the “real” Types. It is unfortunate that they are staying “stuck” in that manner of thinking though - I think it just slows down progress. In light of that, I like to think of myself as a Type 2NF (NF - Non-fat hehehe)
I won’t be much help to you because I am also confused about what my c peptide results showed. My c peptide was 2.0 and it was also done fasting. I am not on any type of medicine at this point. The endo is pretty sure I have one of the types of mody and will do genetic testing to find out for sure. The 2.0 was ok according to the doc.
