Can you be fat and have an eating disorder?

But how much have you been eating, Lila? Probably not more than usual, and the fetus, along with the placenta and amniotic fluid is still really tiny. What you are experiencing is the insulin resistance caused by the hormones secreted by the placenta. So the insulin is going to process the normal amount of food that you are eating, and there is no reason to gain much weight at this point in your pregnancy. It’s food that makes you gain weight, not insulin.

Later on in your pregnancy, you will start to gain more weight, and your insulin resistance will go up even more – not to be alarmed by, because it’s the placenta doing its thing. Then you WILL gain fat, but again, that’s normal, because a woman needs a fat reserve in order to have the energy for breastfeeding. And breastfeeding is the best way to take off the fat that you gained during pregnancy!

And I’m hoping for a wonderful, normal pregnancy for you, and a beautiful happy baby – work carefully with your endo and your ob-gyn, and keep those BGs where they’re supposed to be as well as you can!
