On October 14, Cellnovo announced the start of a usability study of its mobile-enabled insulin pump in the UK. The trial will essentially study how patients like using the new product. The study has enrolled 24 current pumpers, including children, and it will run until the end of 2013. The company plans to launch the system in the UK before the end of 2013 and release it more broadly in Europe following the launch. Cellnovo plans to file for FDA approval in the US in 2014.

The Cellnovo system consists of a unit worn on the body (pump, reservoir, tubing), a wireless color touchscreen handheld controller with an integrated blood glucose meter, and a web-based data management system. The system is similar to a patch pump like Insulet’s OmniPod, although the piece worn on the body requires a very short 0.4 inch (1 cm) infusion set. The remote monitoring and data management capabilities will be useful features, as users will be able to see all historic data from the handset and pump through an online web portal in near real time. The handheld will use a cellular data connection and can trigger text message alerts, which we think would be quite attractive for parents of young children in particular. For more information on the Cellnovo system, please read our previous update here or see the company’s website. –NL/AB

Especially for parents, this sounds like a wonderful system, but ...

There is no way I would want to automatically upload all of my data to the web. If this is a feature that I can turn off, then maybe. Since I am the only one I want to have immediate access to all of my data, and I am always with my pump, I don't need this feature. I think it will have a limited market, but sounds exciting for those who need it.

There are a few issues. If that handset is broken the pump is useless
Why not use a phone interphase ? It really does not have anything that other pumps don’t have or can’t do with some effort. And it hs no cgm option.
You are locked in to those strips and that built in meter
And for me, this isn’t eve available in the US so well that should be avail in about 9 years when it will seem like a dinosaur.

I wish one of the pump companies would come out with a cgm and stripped down pump that can be controlled with a smart phone. Then all the connectivity if you want that is built in.
The pump can be easily updated etc.
I know mm and dexcom/animas are working on versions of this idea.
