thx Cora. currently, i tk Vitamin D, B-complex, 500mg C (slow release), Calcium, and a Centrum SIlver for Women Multi. i heard that fish oil was excellent, but i eat fish so frequently, that i bypass that suppliment.Same goes for the potassium.
as far as your second suggestion goes; i thoroughly agree with you; i eat a very healthy balanced diet and believe i get plenty of nutrients from that.
Have you had any PVL studies done just to rule out you don't have a deep vein thrombosis? I mean if electrolytes are all normal and you are STILL having cramping it might be worth a check. Being diabetic can lead to vascular problems and DVT's can cause leg pain. Im just thinking out loud and it may not even be the case, but walking around with a DVT or massaging it is the last thing you want to do.
When it's not D related you can always blame it on age. I say that because it sounds like the problem I've had for quite a few years...Spinal Stenosis. It might not be Stenosis but it sounds like some form of it. Before I was dxed with Stenosis, like you I thought it was D related and so did the drs. Also like you I had Neuropathy for years until I learned to have tighter control on my D. The Ortho dr. I went to also tried treating me for Neuropathy even when I insisted it wasn't, anyway eventually I found out it was Stenosis. It involves certain disk in the spine which effect certain nerves. I hope it isn't but it sounds like it.
I'd had pretty bad calf cramps on a lot of 10+ mile runs for the last couple of years. Before the last 20 mile training run before last weekend's marathon, I laid off coffee for a week and didn't have any cramps. I went back on the juice the two "taper" weeks (12 and 8 miles...) but didn't have any caffeine the week before the marathon and didn't have any cramps this year.
HI all, I too have pain in the legs, thought it was due to crestor since this is when it started. been a month now, and the pain is still there, I have tried walking it out, lying in bed, pressure point, drugs, etc... nothing seems to be helping it, the pain I believe is raising my blood sugars as well which does not help. keep saying to myself can't take this one more day but well guess I have no choice, I am on meds for kidney and also heart meds since my pulse appears to be to high for the doctors liking. also on Lantus split and humalog, so insulin, kidney med, heart med, and gabapentin which I stopped yesturday since it does not seem to be helping anyways. should I be walking this out or?????? I need relieve, feeling very depressed now, the tests that the doctors have looked into says no inflamation?? they do not know what is going on. need suggestions please, something I may be taking or not taking, lack of excercise, to much etc...
also lately i get priky feeling throughout my body, and have little tiny bumps on my back shoulders, front chest and stomach area, could the kidney or heart meds be doing this?
Hi Dishers, sounds like you need to get off of that Crestor. I at one time was on statin drugs such as Crestor and lots of the others and because of leg pain had to stop. I had a neighbor who was also on statins and persisted in taking them because she wasn't aware of the side effects they could cause, eventually she got the disease they cause and she became paralized. She's better now but had a long period of rehabilitation. The other problem you're having with those bumps I'm not familiar with but be persistent in finding an answer.
dear lotsofshots, i had radioactive iodine tx for hyperactive thyroid in 1987. for the past 24 yrs i have been on synthroid. low dose, but i get it checked by my endo every 3 months, so its not that. i have been on my psych meds since college. i cannot go off of them and be out and about in society. i must be hospitalized. so im kinda stuck btw a rock and a hard place.but thank you nevertheless!!!!! Daisy Mae
Hi Betty J, I was on Crestor for a week and then the pain started so went off them but the pain after a month is still as painful as when it started. I am hoping that it is just residue to having taken the med's, like I said before they took blood work but once result have to wait two weeks for. sigh
I know I'm joining in late and there can be a lot of reasons for these issues. But, you mention neuropathy and I wanted to share my ongoing struggles with pain related to that issue.
I already had some pretty bad PN at diagnosis (it's a long sad story, but best guess is I had D as long as 10 years prior).I was DX in Oct of 2010 (FBG 436, A1c 12.3), started insulin around Thanksgiving and had an A1c of 5.6 in Feb of 2011. All I knew was that the only hope of reversing the complications was a normal blood sugar. I didn't know about the consequences of bringing my BG down too quickly. The pain was hideous and almost non stop. I noticed it had lessened in August of 2011 and by December it had become more off than on.
By then I had noticed a pattern. I had begun to feel better and would adjust to this new norm. Then the pain would return. Usually more localized and intermittent. Lots of cramps and spasms. Seemingly out of nowhere. Then it would be gone and I would notice an improvement in my function and feeling. These periods seem to pass after a few short days usually, but not always. I just went through about a month of this and have noticed much improvement and almost no pain for the last couple weeks.
Looking back to when this all apparently started it's almost like the pain and problems are similar in reversal to what they were going in. I hope this is of some help to you or anyone else following this thread. I know for sure that hydration, meds and potassium play no role in explaining my issues. I also know that I can tie my shoes again and usually on the first try!
Potassium isn't the only thing that causes leg cramps. Poor circulation plus low sodium levels can also cause leg craps as well as other things as well. Low potassium isn't the only cause
no, kathy, what i meant was that maybe i had LOW potasium levels. now ive been eating a banana every day (for the past 5 or so months) no change, except walking a lot more and stretching out my legs the way my endo showed me.
