Delay of insulin action

I’m gonna call this Dawn Phenomenon until proven otherwise.
Could you simply elevate your basal dose a little, starting around 4am?

I think that would fix it.

I have tweaked my basal in the morning over and over again. I have a strong Dawn Effect for sure!

DP kicks my ■■■. Sometimes I have to double my dosage starting at 3am. If I were eating breakfast regularly, I would bump the morning basal up higher, but I don’t. This is my “middle ground” that allows me ultimate lifestyle flexibility - eat breakfast or don’t.

If I were to eat breakfast, I would still need to deliver a HUGE bolus dose, like 5u/12g. But when I have more DP, I also have more energy in the AM without eating. When I wake up, my liver is kicking sugar and energy out into my bloodstream, so I don’t need to eat, maybe.

The original “human” insulin we inject is GM; it is not produced in the manner of Hitler or, indeed, others, by grinding down humans. Rather it is produced by Modifying the genetics of lesser organisms to produce the nominated “human” insulin.

The “analogs” (curious word) are produced by Genetic Engineering; our god given (note the lower case) genetic code is modified by the high and mighty, or at least well endowed, to produce much better (than the afore-mentioned deity’s) insulins.

But to produce the product of the new god we have to use the old gods; the prokaryotes. We insert our own jeans (not quite true; the washed out genes of some exploited person almost certainly female) into one of our old sad ancestors whose name, Escherichia Coli, we simply denigrate.

Then get her children to produce our god created insulin. The God, of course, being ourselves, or our masters.

So much attitude in those four letters, so much assumption of right or wrong, so little understanding of the truth and so little understanding of life.

I think you made a very simple idea into something that sounds difficult to follow. If you don’t already understand transfection, then I don’t think most will be able to follow your thought pattern and descriptive metaphors.
For the others, I can explain it rather quickly for those interested in knowing where our insulin comes from.
When I was diagnosed I started on purified pork insulin that was literally pulled out of pigs that were killed for food production.
The first recombinant dna insulin came out around that time and marketed in the 80s.
Starting with a bacteria, E-coli is the most used and versatile and it grows fast. Then take that E. coli bacterium and remove its dna, leaving a shell of empty bacteria cell.
Then they transfect, by essentially injecting the dna sequence for human insulin. This turns the cell into an insulin factory.
Cells don’t live long so they grow a while and then die, the cell debris is filtered and insulin is left behind along with any left over food which is filtered out.
Analong insulins are genetically altered to mostly work faster.
There are more modifications to make it work even faster by adding additional chemicals to make it absorb faster.
I don’t think many feel bad for the bacteria. This transfected bacteria is kept in the lab to make more, so wild type e-coli are not even used anymore. The cell line is just used to make more.
I just read recently about an insulin that itself responds to glucose concentrations, so if that works out it will be a huge game changer. I’m excited by the possibilities.
If you are a pure science minded person then you know that research has its downside. In this case the hijacking of bacteria.
If you are a Christian minded person, then you understand that god make all things for us to eat and or use to make our lives better. I think it’s one of the few things we can mostly agree on.

You might have inadequate long term basal insulin. This can make it appear as if the short acting insulin isn’t working.

Some things that can affect the action of insulin are

There are several things that can cause slow insulin response.

  1. Not sure about this one, but there may be a rise in insulin resistance with age.
  2. Stress which releases stress hormone. The stress can be physical such as weight training or emotional.
  3. Chemically induced such as taking corticosteroids (stresss hornones) by mouth or injection. I am curently having to take prednisone and I go through insulin like water over Niagara Falls. Several years ago I received a steroid injection in my knee. The orthopedist assured me that it would be contained within the capsule and shouldn’t be an issue. Well never trust a bone mechanic when it comes to other conditions.
  4. The quality of the insulin. It may be an issue with this vial, pen or lot.

You are getting closer to what might be happening with me. I have determined that I have a cortisol rise with intense swimming. I also have some emotional stress weighing on me! These plus perhaps old age and old insulin keep my BG higher! Thanks!

I don’t agree.

I’m somewhat more violent; I believe that if I kill a thing I don’t need to kill, be it prokaryote or eukaryote, I have done unnecessary harm.

So I guess I’m an American at heart because I believe in only killing those things I need to kill to stay alive, and then, in my cups, not always; I believe that some, well many, things have more right to be alive than I.

I won’t throw any more gasoline onto the fire. That is sufficient.

Insulin requires killing bacteria sort of. I mean we allow it to reach maturity and then it dies but they are sort of enslaved. However the only other option is to go back to killing pigs and cows for insulin. I’m type 1 so there is no other option

Better than dogs who gave their lives that comatose children were resurrected 102 years ago.

Best explanation I’ve heard! I shall always remember this. THANKS!

What CGM is the one with the black background?

@HappyG It looks like it might be the Sugar Mate ap. I use it at night and leave my phone unlocked up on my charger stand so I glance at it at night and see my BG levels easy and it doesn’t light up the whole room.

@Timothy I am a Christian and a vegan. I definitely do not believe God put everything here for us to eat and use to make our lives better.

Well it does say that in Genesis but I don’t want to have a religious discussion here. I was just saying I would rather kill bacteria than pigs in order to make insulin. It was a response to another poster lamenting the mistreatment of bacteria. I was just saying it’s better than killing animals
