I have a number of half full lantus pens that were opened and used for exactly 28 days then put back in the refrigerator just in case of emergency (since they were ‘expired’). I might consider trying some of them… just in the name of science. They were opened and used in 2012 initially
Don’t forget your disclaimer!
That blog just says that he flash froze, thawed and used to good effect as a proof of principle. I’m wondering if anyone has used older flash-frozen insulin… Has anyone tried it?
Me, too.
The hypothetical “Zombie Apocalypse” has actually been portrayed to limited believability (and not just because of the zombies). I remember watching the NBC show “Revolution” where the power had been out for fifteen years and Brett Michaels was alive and performing in Las Vegas (which was now more of a Wild West town). We could last MAYBE six months without power, but the end would not be pretty.
Your only chance to survive the power being out was living close to a mountain stream, finding a large cache of insulin, finding a HUGE supply of powered insulin (how it’s shipped by suppliers by many companies), having a degree in chemistry or a chemist friend and the means for rehydrating it and storing it in some type of vial. And we think Type 1 is a hassle NOW!

I think when she talks about preppers she means prepping for earthquakes/ natural catastrophes, not Northern Idaho prepper-style:-)
Of course someone from Northern Idaho is going to be really upset with me now.

I’ve eaten Twinkies for decades and have never murdered anyone.
Nobody we know about at least…
[/quote]Likely because the dead are quickly buried along with any and all evidence because Twinkie energy is incredible. Just FYI, if you can’t find Twinkies then substitute Little Debbie Cloud Cakes.
For insulin, take it out of the fridge and bury it (assuming you are able to go out at all) but not near the dead bodies.
Stuff the insulin, I’m taking this…
Off the top of my head I would say bring extra batteries for a pump and CGM, extra site changes, sugar, glucagon, cartridge changes, test strips, meter batteries. In my earthquake kit we have a small portion of everything that we store in my house. So I would say everything that you would pack when you go on a trip and everything that you carry on a daily basis times 7 or 10. Hope this helps!
