I have been using it non-refrigerated for over 52 years and have never notice an issue…yet. At least the bottle I am currently using. The unopened ones stay in the frig.
And cold insulin used to cause slight pain when I was injecting. As said well by others here when pumping it is supposed to only be used at room temperature. So I’m not sure about a problem, but whatever works for you works for you (yeah, a really deep thought there).
Well I learned something new! I did not know that I was supposed to be using room temperature insulin in my pump! I never have; I always stashed my vial back in the refrigerator. You’d think if this was so important someone would have told me!
I guess I’ll need to start leaving it out for 30 minutes or so before each reservoir filling…
Novolog says to not store in frig after opening and then I read on dlife to always keep your insulin cool. Who’s right. I guess go with the manufacturer. Of course when traveling I always keep it cool but I’m thinking like you, cool is more stable but then if you have to let it warm before injecting or refilling my pump resevoir, then put it back in the frig, does not the warming and cooling help make it more unstable? Which do you do? I’ve called Novodisk and they say keep it at rm temp. after opening. Your guess is as good as anyone elses on this subject. They say they can absorb moisture after opening and keeping in frig. fishinglady
Yeah. When I was diagnosed they specifically told us to always keep my insulin cold. When I was having blood sugar problems and called Animas, I was finally informed not to, as this would cause bubbles. I had used it straight from the fridge for years and nobody ever told me that.
The weird thing is that the information that comes with each vial of Novolog explicitly states that opened vials may be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature for 28 days, and in their ‘Using Novolog in a Pump’ section they don’t mention this. I scoured my Animas PING handbook and also…not a word about using room temperature insulin.
Where does your Novolog say this? My Novolog information (that comes with each vial) says that opened vials may be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature for 28 days.
Do you mean that Novolog PENS shouldn’t be stored in the fridge? (I know that when I used pens I always left them out)
On Animas site if you search for Filing Cartridge it will show in the FAQ:
Air Bubbles
Q. I noticed my cartridge and tubing have air bubbles in them. What could be the cause?
A: Air bubbles can form if refrigerated insulin is used, if the Luer lock connection is not tight, or if using an incorrect cartridge filling technique. Please refer to your Instructions for Use.
NovoLog® should be stored in the refrigerator—between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F)—until first use. Do not freeze. NovoLog® FlexPen®, cartridges and vials that are in use may be kept at room temperature—below 30°C (86°F)—for up to 28 days. Do not store NovoLog® in areas of extreme moisture and where there may be extreme temperatures, such as in a freezer or car.
Hmm…well, like I said the inserts that come in every box with a new vial of Novolog say it’s fine to store them in or out of the fridge for 28 days. I don’t trust leaving them out. It’d be my luck the apartment heats up to 90 degrees unexpectedly one hot day while I’m at work, before I can get the AC on…and there goes my insulin.
