Praying like crazy for a pregnancy. We got my HgA1c to 5.8! :) Now, what do y'all think about Folic Acid? My doctor said the typical 800mcg should be fine but I've read diabetics should take up to 4mg! What have y'all heard? Thank you so much in advance for your responses.
For both of my pregnancies, my doctors (two different teams) recommended a prenatal vitamin, plus 400 mcg (I think I'm remembering this dosage correctly, it's one tablet of the "normal" dosage) of folic acid, at least until the first trimester is over. But my current doc said if I wanted to take more, it was fine... so maybe the research isn't rock solid? I haven't looked into it myself. It's also always a good idea to try to get it through your diet, where it may be absorbed better anyway (in addition to a supplement).
My doctor wanted me on 5mg of folic acid a day when we started trying and for the first trimester, that seems to be pretty normal, as all my doctors were of the same opinion including a nutritionalist I ended up speaking with. It's hard to say I guess especially with all the different studies, I was taking a multi-vitamin with 1000mcg and taking 4mg of folic acid on top of that seperately. I certainly don't think 4mg a day would hurt!
Thank you so much ladies! I appreciate the feedback.
Hi Joanna, sorry for the late reply, just came on here now....this is my second pregnancy and for my first, I was put on 5mg of folic acid (prescription from my Dr.)...I was taking it for a few months while I was regulating my blood sugars before concieving, and then I carried through till I was about 20 weeeks pregnant. I am now seeing a different fetal medicine specialist with this pregnancy and he has told me to just stay on it throughout the whole pregnancy, he just recently went to a conference where they are now recommending all type 1 diabetics go on it before conceiving and stay on it throughout the whole pregnancy, it is not harmful to you and the baby, and in fact it benefits you. I also take an over the counter pre-natal pill that has folic acid and there is no side effects in doing so.
Hope that helps, and good luck!
Amanda
