Frequent "Charlie Horses" at night

Kathy you are very right! When I was diagnosed DKA I had been having them horribly for months before and the cause of it was exactly that! I was so high before being diagnosed and urinating so much I had no potassium left. T

I know how hard this is but as soon as you are awakened get to your feet and walk preferably if you have a hallway outside you room this way you can support yourself if needed. This will get the blood moving and buy a pottasuim suplemt and take it to get you level up if you see this helps you then take them everyday. You can always eat one bannana with a 16 oz glass of milk and get the same effect naturally.

@Phil Dill I know this will sound funny but I jump out of bed and jump up and down…crazy but it works. Some of us can’t have overbundance of potasium because of kidney damage…I’m one. Neuropathy causes leg and foot cramps for those who don’t have potasium deficiency.

this is true you have to find the cause of them. jump i am going to try that i guess it really does the same thing to help blood flow. i will let you know how that goes for me as i have been having them here lately.

Kathy is right. You’re assumption is correct too. The cramps are absolutely related to (type two) diabetes. Both the cramps and the insulin resistance that characterizes type two diabetes are brought on by nutrient deficiencies. You probably did not know this, but you need between 3,000 and 4,000 milligrams of potassium a day. The apparent conflict is that abundant supplies of potassium are found mostly in fruits, yet we (as type two diabetics) are often discouraged from eating too many fruits. The good news is that that is old news. Fruits are considerably lower on the glycemic index scale than foods such as (processed) rice, corn, and potatoes. If you research Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s findings, you’ll see that a high nutrient, low Calorie diet can reduce insulin resistance to the extent that you may no longer need to take those dreaded drugs.

I can attest to the effectiveness of a high nutrient, low carb Calorie diet. Along with some moderate daily exercise, I am now able to resume a normal life, without diabetes medications, all thanks to Natural foods. I was diagnosed at age 51 and am now approaching 59. I struggled and struggled with declining health and an increased need for Metformin. That was over three years ago. This December will mark my fourth year of drug free life. There’s more… I haven’t missed a single day of work, due to illness, in over three years as well. The secret is, there’s no secret… If you give the body the foods it was optimized for (no matter if you’re a Creationist or evolutionist), it will respond in a favorable manner.

Of course, there’s a lot more to this… like the fact that soda is one of the most culpable reasons for mineral deficiencies, but for the most part, adhering to a Natural foods based diet can literally work miracles.

High blood sugars make them worse, because high blood sugars make you deficient in all, or almost all minerals.

Dr Bernstein’s book indicates that calcium supplements taken at bedtime can reduce nightly muscle cramps. He does, however, indicate you need to take calcium with Vitamin D, magnesium and manganese, so it is hard to say if it is actually the calcium or magnesium that does the trick, but it’s cheap enough to where I’d try it before I asked a doctor I didn’t trust.

Cramps also occur in Type 1’s. Although the reasons why some have T2 and T1 the complications are the same. I’ve had Type 1 Diabetes since childhood and am now a senior citizen and have had Neuropathy which started in childhood. Although I don’t suffer from Neuropathy like I did years ago because I learned tighter control I do occasionally get cramps in my feet when my numbers get high. So I like others work hard to keep my bs within range.
