Hello, I'm new here and would like to share my story and ask a few questions

Yes the c-peptide can change after you start taking insulin. It’s not a static measure, and it’s results are very often ambiguous— it is easy to read to much into. In my estimation, only a couple ironclad facts can be absolutely gleaned from it—

  1. if it’s high and your blood sugar is significantly elevated it means you’re insulin resistant

  2. if it’s low and your blood sugar is elevated you are not producing a normal amount of insulin

  3. if it’s zero you’re not producing any insulin

The levels vary throughout the day for a healthy metabolism as it regulates it’s own glucose—

It can be helpful at initial presentation to distinguish between resistance and insufficiency— beyond that my doctor always likes to say that its only remaining value is to determine whether it is zero, or not.

Thanks for the clarification.
Although I don’t remember the exact number on my c-peptide, it was very close to zero.
On my next visit, I’m going to ask for a retest… it’s too bad that’s month away.

Yes your c-pep can change after dx. Thats actually the point of honeymoon. When you ar still not dxd, your insulin production sinks as your beta-cells are busy reproducing and fighting off that immune attack (and of course bc they die). After you get introduced to external insulin, your beta cells can “relax” and reproduce again at a higher level, as they dont have to lower your BG anymore. Thus you have more beta cells and more insulin produced, and your cpep rises again. Hope that made sense.
