HELP! I need more diabetic education!

If you are interested in purchasing either of these books, please consider purchasing them here, which gives some proceeds to the Diabetes Hand Foundation, which runs TuDiabetes (among its other products).

Here is an article regarding low carb diet/ketogenic diet for diabetes as well as here. I will tend to be worried if ketones are too high. High ketone should make you ill ( feeling nauseous) , but if you feel fine, energetic the ketones could be from the diet. My experience is that low carb diet let you feel very energetic (after 5 or more days on the diet) I can also be wrong that is why you should speak to you doctor.

I also found this where it is debated that diabetics should be carefull of a low carb diet.

Manny, a quick look at that list didn’t find these useful links:

Dear Melissa.

I will have this as a principal topic of discussion with my Endo in the near future. I wonder if we are confusing ketosis (metabolizing fat in a low carb diet) à la Atkins with keto-acidosis which is potentially fatal. Give wiki a read under “low carb diet”.

My very feeble comprehension is keto-acidosis will only occur in the absence of insulin. But I am not sure. I will report the summary of our discussion. My Endo does not mind Atkins type diet with the provision of minimizing saturated fats which Atkins did not care about.

A few sites that disagree with some of what that site says:

Before carbs were available to the native populations of Canada they were healthy and vigorous people. Now some communities have 20% incidence of diabetes. Pardon the pun but it is food for thought.

This is interesting. I watched a National Geographic program the other day where a vet tried to fond out why crocs just died in certain places - he also found that there was a thiamine deficiency in the water and as soon as it was introduced in the water the fish and croc’s were healthier. (It has also something to do with black spots on the brain) It seems that Vit B1 could be beneficial for all of us

(My previous reply where I refered to the negative of low carbs was just to suggest that one should also be careful especially if there’s signs of kidney damage. The reply before that, I refered to other sites where it shows that low carbs are beneficial. I think everything is leaning more towards the fact that low carb diets are positive)

Hi Debbie,

You can do a low-carb diet without going into ketosis. Tons of info here & on the web about low carb diets for diabetics.

Hi Nicole,

Here’s another site www.diabetesincontrol.com. Great info there & check out the archived articles & writers. You’re going to be doing a lot of reading from everyone’s great suggestions:)

Be careful of what medicine you take, that’s the best advice I can give. A friend of mine recently had a heart attack after taking Avandia.

I know a lot has been said about it, but not enough. Despite the press millions of people take it everyday.

If you’ve been affected by Avandia, there are a lot of resources available. My friend’s wife sent these over to me to share:
