Curious to see how many people take Symlin more than three times a day. I’m not in the habit of eating more than three meals usually, but sometimes it happens. I travel Internationally at least once a month, sometimes more, and I dont’ always stay on a schedule. What are your experiences eating at irregular times and not necessisarily eating just three meals a day.
Sure, I’ve done it in the past. I can’'t see why it should be a problem as long as you’re not taking multiple doses too close together. I think it’s what your body would normally do if you didn’t have diabetes.
The only problems I can think of would be (a.) taking doses too close to each other - similar to taking too big of a dose (I think it’s supposed to stay active in your body about 3 hours, but someone correct me if that’s wrong.) or (b.) possibly running out before you’re due for a refill (assuming your prescription was written to take about 3 times a day and that your insurance is paying for it). Hope this helps.
Oh, and I’m on an insulin pump, so it’s easy to adjust everything else around the Symlin. If you’re on different insulins, you may need to consider adjusting those around your Symlin.
On some “long” days I’ve taken 4 doses. I think we just need to make sure there are several hours between doses. Symlin only works for a few hours according to their labeling and website. I don’t take it for snacks, just main meals. I do know that for me, the second and third doses in a day are more effective than the 1st (breakfast). This could be due to strong insulin resistance i have in the morning. Experiment but make sure you have glucose at the ready Symlin lows are no fun and hard to treat.
I take it more than three times a day on most days. There doesn’t seem to be a problem in taking it more than three times and the only “irregular” time you might need to be more cautious is before you go to sleep.
Hi, David,
I’m new here and will start Symlin tomorrow (when my hubby is at home). I read your msg and what leapt out at me was “…make sure you have glucose at the ready Symlin lows are no fun and hard to treat.”
So, a couple of questions for you: What form of glucose has worked best for you for a Symlin low? Do you know why Symlin lows are difficult to treat? Any info from your experiences is welcome!
Thank you!
One of the actions of Symlin is to slow the stomach’s ability to empty. This is true when trying to get glucose into your system when blood glucose levels are too low. Usually if you take meal time insulin, that dose is decreased by half when starting Symlin until you know what effect it will have and then the insulin dose is adjusted. Best sources of glucose are liquids and pure glucose like glucose gel or tabs because they will absorb the quickest. Hope this helps.
