I am now on insulin . . . now what?

The doctor put me on insulin today. After taking it I have a slight headache. Could be from the stress today or just from the insulin, right? He also kept me on Metformin. I now take 15cc of insulin twice a day and 1000mg of metformin twice a day. I also take a depression pill before bed. I am upset about having to take the insulin. I have always been told that once I did take insulin that I always would. I so bad wanted to do this on my own, but I just couldn’t. Sometime I still think I am in denial. Does that ever stop? When do I really realize that I am a diabetic and I have to do things differently. I guess my question now is what do I do? Do I still follow that diet that I was given? Do I eat before or after taking the insulin? Can I ever get off the insulin?

What was the diet you were given? If it’s a good balanced diet, being careful of the carbs (especially potatoes, breads, sweets, pasta & rice), then yes, stick with it - eventually you’ll see how your body reacts to certain foods and how much insulin you need to cover ‘naughtiness’ - but it’s best if you keep it simple now. Loads of veggies is a great start!

Which insulin are you on? That makes a difference to when you take it. Seeing as you’re taking it twice a day I’m guessing it’s a basal insulin or a mix? If it’s basal (lantus, NPH, Levemir) then it doesn’t matter when you eat - you take the insulin at the same time every day. I’m not sure about mix insulins - they’re not the best for good control but may be perfectly suitable for your situation, I couldn’t really say.

If you’re definitely a type two then there’s a chance you’ll get off the insulin once you learn about foods, exercise, medication and balancing them all. Don’t worry - you will get used to it all, you CAN do this, and you’ll be just fine!

Denial is perfectly natural, a lot of us have been through it, but you come out stronger

Insulin is not a bad thing. Taking insulin does not mean you did anything wrong. Taking insulin does not make you a failure, a bad person, a bad diabetic, more diabetic, less diabetic, less worthy, less of a person or less of anything.

You may be able to stop injecting insulin someday or you may not. Everyone needs it so it shouldn’t make any difference to anyone that they get it from their pancreas or they get it from a vial. In any case, don’t change your diet or behavior without talking either with your doctor or a certified diabetes educator first. Your doctor should have told you when to take the insulin.

You’re going to be fine. Read a lot. Go to the library or a bookstore and get a book about using insulin. Like “Using Insulin” by John Walsh.

Good luck,

Terry
