I am about three weeks in. My fasting glucose has dropped remarkably: from 230 or so to about 140 so far. I am losing weight, too. Peeing and drinking water constantly; hard to stay hydrated. Also suffering from insomnia. The lower BG is worth it, though.
That is very interesting results. Thank you for sharing!
How long did it take to work. I just got some samples from my endo today and want to know how many days/weeks does it take to work? Thanks!
Does Invokana cause insomnia? Already an insomniac so if this is a symptom might not be a good choice for me. I took my first dose yesterday and struggled to get some sleep!
I am excited to hear how things are going,I will start this tomorrow,100 mg. I am looking to reduce my numbers ,any weight loss is a bonus. Nancy
I used it and it worked well for my type 1.5 (Mody) however, I am allergic to this medication so had to give it up! I kept my weight stable with it and numbers were not to low, not to high. Just right. Good luck with it. I am back to glimiperide. UGH
Been on it since May. Result has been greatly improved fastings (115-140 at 9 am, and I eat my main meal at midnight) and have lost about 25 pounds.
I've been on Invokana since April. My A1C before I started was 7.1, after 2.5 months it was 5.8. My daily readings have lowered an average of 30-40 points, and I've lost 35 pounds.
Like Mike I've had improvement on Invokana although I've only been on it for two months. My problems have always been high fastings and Invokana really helped cut those fasting numbers. Despite carefully adjusted MDI and taking metformin I'd been unable to bring my fasting in line, my body just fought tooth and nail to keep my fastings in the 120-140 mg/dl range. Invokana really helped and I've had much better fastings.
Another really noticeable change was a decrease in my level of basal insulin required, I dropped my daily basal dose about 30-40%. That is a significant change. I may have lost a pound or two, but nothing significant. I've also not noticed any serious side effects except frequent urination which isn't too bad, I don't even need to get up at night. The biggest adverse effect is UTI's which occur more frequently in women.
The big thing is to make sure you adjust your insulin to avoid hypos.
At my diabetes support group last Monday, we had a CDE guest speaker. Someone asked about Invokana. The CDE explained that (among other risks), there is a greatly-increased risk of urinary tract infections because the drug causes a lot of sugar to be dumped into the bladder.
It is always good to see what the actual prescribing information says. We may not believe it, but it is the information that these "experts" draw from. So the prescribing information for Invokana says that during a placebo controlled study about UTIs occurred in 4% of the patients in the placebo arm. In the 100mg Invokana arm the UTI rate was 5.9% and in the 300mg arm the UTI rate was 4.3%. In my twisted view of the world this is a slight increase in risk of UTIs. And I suspect that if they broke it out men probably had almost no increase in UTI risk and women had most of the risk. Compare this to metformin where the risk of diarrhea went from 11.7% in the placebo arm to 53.2% of the metformin arm. We don't hear CDE's telling people not to take metformin because of the greatly increased risk of diarrhea when in fact that risk is really "greatly-increased."
Fear not, I listened to an endo two weeks ago make the same misinformed claim.
Have you tried daily exercise?
six days a week for years
Try to go on Keto my friend..or what is called LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). I am doing that right now and my sugar reading at home came down from 158 to 115 just in a few days. Check this link (http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq#wiki_videos) to see if works for you so you can avoid or lower your medication. Must work with your doctor to regularly monitor you doctor.
Good Luck
I'm taking Invokana 300 mg, Glimepiride 8 mg and Lantus 50 units once a day. This works well for me if I control my eating habits. My only problem is Invokana I pee a lot and drink a ton of water. Lately I started to have some minor rashes and daily constipated. I cut the invokana in half 150mg thinking that the drug is making me constipated and it work
I have to tell my Doctor about it also at time I have a runny nose but I don't have a cold. I use to be on Levemir but after 2 years on it it sort of stop working that's when my doctor put me on Lantus.
