Is diabetes the "go to disease" in every example?

My friend, who is also diabetic, said to me, “You haven’t been diabetic long enough to notice this, but eventually you will find that any time anyone is talking about health care, in just about any context, and needs to think of an example of a disease, they will use diabetes.” And so far, he’s been absolutely right. Diabetes has been the go-to disease every time a discussion of health care, in the concrete or the abstract, has come up with other people–and none of these people know that either one of us is diabetic.

Has anyone else experienced this?
