Is My CGM Actually Useful Overnight?

I hope things improve. Though I admit, I’m a bit flummoxed as it sounds like she almost feels like you were ignoring it on purpose just to annoy her. Why in the heck would you do something to annoy her and get kicked in the middle of the night?!

Have you considered counseling together to work through the lack of support/understanding?

I also have a second CGM (my wife) that 95% of the time is better than any meter on the market. She doesn’t like to deal with ultra lows and the complications that come with it (EMS)
She therefore wakes me up when she hears the vibration of the CGM. I use the Animas Vibe and don’t feel the vibration when I sleep and as I do not have my hearing aids in when I sleep I won’t hear the soft alarm tone, but I always hear the loud alarm tone I have set on my G4 receiver which I use in conjunction with the vibe when at home.
I can’t believe that when your G4 receiver is set for loud alarm that you can sleep through it.
Bottom line; Yes the CGM is useful at night! Especially at night as you don’t constantly look at it as you will during the day.
Since using a CGM I have always said that it is the best thing for insulin depended diabetics. After 47 years of using insulin the CGM has made my and my wife’s life a lot easier in the past 10 years.
Pumps are nice, inject pens are nice, maybe even some medication and newer insulins are nice, but the CGM beats them all for diabetes management.

I am a pretty heavy sleeper as I sleep through storms and earthquakes but I don’t sleep through children moving in another room at night or my dexcom alarming. Back when my kids were young, I could hear everything. Really wonder how that skill happens? But my dexcom is in my pillow case and I always hear it. I literally shoot up and grab it because I don’t want to wake my husband. He is very understanding and has been there through everything but now that I have a CGM, he can finally get a good night sleep.
Overnight alarms is a huge reason for having the CGM, but also be unaware of hypo’s, it makes it a life saver. But I guess if your main reason for it is overnight control and you can’t hear it, I would also question the why keep it. But I get so much more from it than just my overnight numbers. It has been the greatest thing for diabetes since insulin and blood testing meters!

Does your wife know how to prepare an injection? You could keep glucagon or something similar in the house and she could inject it if your glucose crashes. Much cheaper than going to the local emergency

Welcome stvndk!

I see that you are a very long time diabetic - you obviously must be very experienced!

I am worried about your advice on dextrose injections, since it may be seen by more novice diabetics than you. If you don’t really know what you are doing, there is great danger in doing dextrose injections:

  1. if you don’t inject dextrose intravenously, it won’t work

  2. in addition to not working, injecting it subcutaneously or intramuscularly can damage the tissue. It can cause necrosis and severe tissue damage, rotting out the tissue.

  3. Unless she is trained, asking your spouse to inject dextrose intravenously is a bad idea. And asking her to do it subcutaneously or IM serves no purpose other than to damage your tissue.

  4. I think you really need to be trained: only trained personnel (or @Eric2) should inject stuff intravenously.

  5. Someone who is not trained placing an IV needle would take much longer to do that than it would take them to give a glucagon shot.

Which, I guess, brings me to my main point: what is wrong with recommending glucagon? It’s safe and it works quickly! Why use a dextrose injection when you could use glucagon?

As a note, since the OP was about the Dexcom not waking you up, check out @Eric2’s post about how to make your Dexcom turn on the bedroom lights for you:

Thanks to @Eric2 for bringing your post to my attention and mentioning all the above points as concerns. I agree with each one of them.

Oops. I meant to say Glucagon. My mistake. I corrected it. My comment was off topic. I will stick to the topic. My apologies
