I cannot speak to insulin being frozen but toit being out of chill for ten or more hours instead. Last year the chill packs I packed around my insulin when flying to Canada from the UK didn’t work. There was also the usual wait at Customs and a two hour car journey, so just over ten hours or so. I checked with the pharmacist who advised that my 8nsulin, Novorapid and Toujeo, are both stabilised insulin’s and that I probably shouldn’t worry too much. He was correct, immediately I put it back into the fridge and continued to use it, my sugars were fine and in range until it was all used up. I don’t know if it would be the same if it had become frozen but… also, there seems to be some variance in how long it lasts in our bloodstream. My meter, freestyle Libre gives an estimate of four and a half hours per injection, I received the same info from my educator as well.
I figure I’ve used at least 26 fridges to store insulin in over the past 48 years without stressing about where in the fridge the insulin is or whether the temperature is constant, and I’ve travelled for several months in a warm climate without refrigerating it, and camped for a couple of weeks in a record-breaking heat wave without refrigerating it, and if there’s been any detrimental effect, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed. If I lived in the desert or above the Arctic circle I might be more concerned.
