Lantus vs Levemir

LANTUS LONG TERM INSULIN is a product I have used for years. My doctors told me that my daily consumption had to be 70 units. Being such an active person that works in a gym, and living in the heart of Manhattan where everything needed, was within a ten (10) to fifteen (15) block radius, consistent walking everywhere is my normality, due to that consumption of 70 unit dosage my low sugar numbers at times were out of control, on average four (4) times daily my sugar level would become 56, 62 and even 43.

Personally I just could not deal with those horrible sugar lows, so I personally changed my dosage intake to 35 units daily, and on an inactive day even 40 units. Even with that low dosage I still got dire low sugar levels, and because I had lowed my consumption of the Lantus at times my sugar levels would hit highs of 582, in spite of me eating well, of good health foods. This situation had become regularity and my 'Medical Glucose Count was consistently 9.5 to 10'. My doctors expressed great concern to me about those high levels.

I honestly did my best, but prime example for me in the morning after my LANTUS 35 unit intake, I had to elevate my sugar, using two (2) cups of brown rice, to elevate my sugar level to a minimum of 282, I know very high, reason being is with high sugar level I would then go to my gym for an hourly workout (this done to avoid a glucose crash), and upon returning home, my glucose levels would always be on average 60.

I felt hopeless and just did the best I could. In January of this year, 2012 I accidentally bashed the calf of my left foot against my wooden filing cabinet, it became quite swollen by an infection, and for being diabetic I took the preventative measure of being hospitalized which I undertook. It turned out to be a Cellulitis Staph infection, (not the harsh staph infection) one that I had previously attained, thru the ignored and uncleanliness St. Vincent’s Hospital in Chelsea, where I received treatment for my pancreatic infection (The infection was a nice little gift from Bristol Myers Squibbs Medication that caused the pancreatic infection[Being very sarcastic]) in 2002 that made me diabetic.

While hospitalized up at Roosevelt in January of 2012, they administered to me a different long term insulin, so I questioned as to why the difference and was told, that the one administered was not as volatile as Lantus and more effective because of it lack of volatility. After being discharged returning home I went to my new Endocrinologist and queried him, all about this new long insulin Levemir 100u/mg, to which he confirmed what I had been told, I asked him to immediately change me onto it.

I personally have been quite shocked at how effective and non-volatile the Levemir is. Guys being overcautious I started out at five (5) units daily then slowly elevated it to six and one half (6.5) units daily. It blew my mind at it’s calm and efficient control. I now consume Levemir without apprehension administering 6.5 units every morning and not for once have I had a low sugar attack, my glucose numbers are now consistently between 88 and 179 at highest.

Levemir has changed my view on long term insulin and within in one month I have my glucose totally under control. It has never ever gotten over 179 and not once have I had a low sugar attack, this insulin change has resulted in me having four extra vials of long term Lantus in my fridge, of which they found a new home, after I smashed them I threw them in my trash can.

I felt as thought God had finally stepped in and told the producers of Lantus insulin Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC to take a hike, get a clue and buy a brain.

Guys if any of you are on Lantus please do highly consider to change you long term insulin to Levemir and get your sugar levels totally under control. It’ll blow your mind, and no I am not a sales rep for Novo Nordisk.

Kind Regards,

I'm confused. I just switched from Lantus to Levemir and my dose stayed almost exactly the same (55 IU Lantus to 56 IU Levemir).

How could you start at 70 IU of Lantus and end up at 6.5 IU of Levemir? If 6.5 is of Levemir is the correct dose, wouldn't 70 IU of Lantus have been deadly?

Is the Levemir you're using a different concentration?

I am also enjoying the switch (no Lantus burn, less bruising) but I actually have a bit more volatility due to the shorter action of the Levemir compared to the Lantus, and have been wondering if I'll need to go to three shots per day instead of two.

I hated Lantus. Battle with my doc to change to Levemir & worth it!

First let me say that I use Levemir and I'm very happy with it but I don't know if I would make such a statement advising anyone on Lantus to switch. Everyones body and everyones diabetes are not the same. What works for one person may not be the best for all.

I'm not trying to bust any ones chops. I just want to point out this fact. I'm glad you found that Levemir works for you, it does for me also. Thank you for sharing your story.

Stemwinder,
I am not advising anyone to do anything for any reason, that's the individuals call, not mine.

I am just informing the public what I was advised by the nurse at the Roosevelt hospital who stated quite clearly to me:

"We do not use Lantus in this hospital anymore, it is too volatile, it has been replaced with Levemir!

That's all nothing more and yes what works for one person may not be the best for all.
Mark

Wow Mark that is quite a story. In my case levemir is interchangeable with lantus although I need 25% more levemir to do the same job making it much more expensive. I don't see how a Doctor could tell you to take a minimun of 70 units a day. The proper dosing of insulin is the patients responsability since the Doctor cannot be with you 24/7. There is a book called: "using insulin" by Walsh that tells you how to set the basal and bolus rate. It is hard to see how 70 units of lantus can be replaced by 6 units of levemir but the chemistry of the two are quite different so this is great that you found levemir. It is a good idea to experiment with different insulins. I presently stopped the lantus for a while and am using R and apidra. works but needs injections every 5 hours.

Lantus works better for me but as always YDMV!

Ok I only read the first paragraph and stopped. I'm on Lantus and take 20 units a day. 70 would literally KILL ME.

What crazy Endo are you seeing who thinks you have to do that much?

I take offense to you blaming Lantus when infact it's your stupid Endo who should be blamed. you mentioned doctors? are the Endos? or just GPs? Those are the ones who messed you up, not Lantus. When used correctly Lantus has been fabulous for me. Kept me off the pump and I have an AIC of 7.

That's a crap statement. Are you sure you aren't working for Levemir? And a nurse is NOT and ENDO!!! You really need to talk to a proper Endo and stop listening to bizzare medical advice from those who are not trained extensively.

Lantus worked really great for me, I split my dose when I was on it. I took around 20 units at night and around 16 units during the day and it worked beautifully. I tried Levemir...and it was awful for me blood sugar all OVER the place. I went back to Lantus after using 3 pens of the Levemir, but then I switched to my pump and that has really made a HUGE difference.

Okay Everyone I am sorry that I offended you by bring up a topic that I though would be beneficial to some, but instead I got a such a harsh reaction of that of a 5 year old spoiled child, so I am wrong and will die from cancer. Goodbye idiots

I'm sorry you are leaving Mark and I hope you decide to stay. Like I said earlier I wasn't trying to bust your chops. I just felt that your post might have been misunderstood by others. Your story was a positive one of success that this group needs to hear and I thank you for telling it.

If you decide to stay you will find this group to be a very caring and supportive bunch. If you leave it will be a loss not only for you but for this group also.

No, personally I really needed this kind of post

Wow. I HATED Levemir. It has severe peaks for me and I was hypo almost every night. I never got a good night’s sleep. I could see the peak at 4 hours. I told my endo I would rather do ANYTHING than ever go back on Levemir. I was on Lantus before that - had beautiful A1Cs and meter readings but I switched because I panicked over reports of increased tumor growth at the time. My doctor put me on Tresiba last year (17 units a day). If one could ever love an insulin, I love Tresiba. I would go back to Lantus, however, if I cannot have have Tresiba approved by my new insurance. But that’s what works for -me-. All of our diets, lifestyle, bodies are totally different.

70 units would also kill me. Literally. I have almost zero pancreatic function and I only take 3 or 4 units of fast with my low-carb meals. 10 units with a meal (of Humalog) would also almost kill me.
