+1 on the doc shopping. I feel fortunate that I found a pretty good practice but I’ve heard horror stories.
Also, have you had your cpeptide levels checked? Just curious.
Regarding metformin, I asked my doc about it, and she said that she does not recommend it for T1s because of the potential issues surrounding kidney damage. She felt that, in her opinion, the risks were too great.
Good to know. Yes I had my c-peptide level checked it was 1.42 and I was Gad65- positive. My aunt said that metformin did do kidney damage as well. My mom has been on it for 10 years and her last gfr was 56 not so good.
wow… I am on Synthroid and this could explain my highs… thanks for this info.
Metformin is metabolized by your liver, so if you have liver problems, there can be issues as can stacking metformin on other drugs or substances that put a load on your liver (like Tylenol and alcohol). As to kidney damage, metformin alone is not thought to hurt your kidneys. If you have existing kidney problems, you should not take metformin because you will be more prone to lactic acidosis, a rare side effect. “But,” and that is a big but, if you ever have a medical diagnostic test that uses a contrast dye, be careful, the combination of metformin and contrast dye can cause kidney damage.
