The past 2-3 months I have been doing some moderate cardio 5x/week and some brief resistance exercises 3x/week. So fairly active. As a result I have already dropped my Lantus dose from 18 to 13 every day but my blood sugars still aren’t totally ironed out.
Last night I did some overnight testing. I started out at 9.0 at 11 p.m. when I took my Lantus dose. 2:00 a.m. 6.3 4:00 a.m. 6.1 6:00 a.m. 4.9 8:00 a.m. (breakfast time) 7.4. All night I had that funny “uneasy” feeling I get when my blood sugar is starting to drop but not quite low yet (but it wasn’t very pronounced, I’m not sure it wasn’t in my head.) Definitely when I got up at 8 I felt “buzzy” like I had just had or was about to have a low. So I think I’m seeing a rebound effect!
So I’m just wondering…is it possible the exercise I did at 9 a.m. yesterday morning could have still been affecting my blood sugars last night? Or is it more likely to be well and truly my Lantus dose that needs to come down some more?
absolutely, when you exercise, especially resistance combined with cardio, your metabolism gets revved for the rest of the day. If you have any amount of muscle from weight training, that muscle will continue to burn fat and burn calories even while your body is at rest. Just to test it out to see if that’s the case, take one day off from exercising and see if there’s a difference. I would say it has to do with the amount of muscle burning calories in your body though, which is why you should eat alot of protein during the days of activity to keep your bg stable
I agree with both posts. I have been trying very hard to get similar numbers to you. If you are accustomed to running higher blood sugars, lower, healthier numbers can cause anxious feelings. If you haven’t eaten for 5-10 hours, your liver may kick in to help raise your blood sugars… But not always. Lantus can also cause your heart to race if your sugars are lower than usual, I find.
I’m not super muscular or anything but I certainly have more muscle mass than I did when I started. I’ll see about doing another set of overnight tests starting Sunday night since I usually take weekends off.
