When I took shots, I said that I was "shooting up". I found that people got very serious and treated me weirdly if I said I was taking some insulin. Everyone would kinda laugh it off when I said "shooting up". Maybe it's different among adults.
Agreed re "shooting up," I often tell people I'm shooting heroin, and that I'd share but I don't believe in needle-sharing. Then I explain that it's actually insulin. Gets a laugh and breaks the tension. Of course, on a pump now so no more injections...
ahahha wow, thats so cool
Hey Adele,
Nothing to worry about, the needles are too short and too thin to be of any risk to veins, arteries below.
You are injecting insulin into a subcutaneous fat layer. The chances of you injecting into a vein are pretty much nil. Arteries run deep so it is highly unlikely you could hit one if you tried with a pen needle.
You may occasionally hit some capillaries in the skin layer with your needle causing bleeding for a few seconds, just press down with a paper towel. Peroxide for any annoying blood spots on clothes (actually probably a bad idea taking this into a school environment ha) failing that cold water straight away!
Just be sure that you pinch up a bit of fat before you inject if you are a very lean person to be sure you get into the fat layer and not the muscle. The muscle will hurt and the absorption rate of the insulin wont be the same. Also make sure you are using the correct length needle for your body type.
My advice would just keep injecting in public until the fear goes away or alternatively, keep your supplies in your bag and inject somewhere privately where you aren't stressed out.
Thankyou for all the helpful advice Buckley i really appreciate it.
