I am using a 670G Medtronic pump and CGM and have been on Fiasp for about 11 months. After reading about it on diabetes forums, I asked my Endo to prescribe it. He did a quick on line check and agreed to prescribe it as a replacement for Novolog.
My A1c has shown some slight improvement; however, my A1c has always fluctuated from test to test so it may not be a perminant trend. The major difference I have noticed is that I can still often go high after a meal but after three hours or so, I now tend to go low and need to eat 5 to 8 carbs to bring me back up over 75.
Hi @Don1942, I am glad you have a doctor who will prescribe Fiasp. I think all T1D’s should have the opportunity to try it. My endo will not approve, but a friend sent me a few vials to use, as an experiment.
I have used Fiasp for 9 days, and I am also seeing occasional highs after a few meals.
I am curious about the 1942. Is that the year you were born? I was born in 1939.
Hi Richard! Thanks so much for such great info about how you manage your Type 1.
My 50 anniversary is in 2021. I have no complications except for hypoglycemic unawareness during the night, but by using Tresiba I have been able to stop those for about 1.5 years now. I take 5 units of Tresiba every morning and use Fiasp to bring down any spikes, averaging about 8 units daily.
One thing on Tresiba I notice is some pretty big spikes from lows. I think this happens because I take too much sugar or juice to bring up a low. I am doing my best to moderate the amount of sugar or juice I take when lows happen.
I live in Canada so my insulin costs are not as bad as they would be in the USA. Not on a pump and take my shots with a syringe. This works really well for me as I can selectively eat carbs when I am craving something yummy!
I initially tried Fiasp a bit over a year ago and found it ineffective sometimes. I would need to take 5 units of Fiasp to get the same result as 2 units of Humalog.
So basically I follow a low carb diet, try to get enough exercise and give myself a treat every few days (and correcting that treat with Fiasp). I am quite pleased with Fiasp now and will continue to use it.
I also think I just have some lucky genes that have let me avoid complications. I am hoping to live for a least 20 more years!
Oh! One other thing my doctor told me recently was that in some recent research, it was found that long-term Type 1 diabetics who don’t have any complications have low LDL cholesterol levels, 2.0 or lower. Mine is at 2.15 right now but I am working to reduce it further.
Cheers!
Sheryl
Hi @Sheryl, you are doing very very well with your management! You live in Canada, but you can get a 50 year medal in two more years. There are several Canadians who have received the Joslin medal.
I am interested in your LDL report. The scale used in Canada is not the same as the one used in the US. My most recent LDL is 49 based on a 0-99 preferred range. I wish I knew how that would compare to the scale used in Canada.
Hi Richard,
I just researched a bit and found that to transpose my LDL level into the American value, I need to multiply it by 39.
That means my LDL level of 2.15 in Canada would be 191.35 in the USA. I think! Here is the link to that info: <title>How Do I Convert My Cholesterol Values into American? By Dr. Peter W. Kujtan
Hope this helps! I keep on trying to get it lower as my doc really stresses that the lower the LDL the better for Type 1s.
All these different measurements are a bit of a drag…
Cheers!
Sheryl
Hi, all, T-1 with 42 years of using many different strategies. Now doing MDI using Novolog and Tresiba.
Last week my endo recommended I try Fiasp for some post-meal highs. He wanted to give me a sample to try, but didn’t have any on hand, so he gave me a new Rx. I got home and remembered that I had just refilled my Novolog Rx, to the tune of an as-yet-unopened box of 5 pen cartridges.
I decided it made more sense to trial Fiasp first, before investing in a whole new box of insulin. But my doctor hasn’t gotten any more samples from his Rep yet. The problem seems to be that the Reps these days are more reluctant to give out samples. I thought I’d check here to see if anyone else has experienced this lately. Any advice?
