Yea, that’s an itty bitty dose. Vit D is, according to some reseachers, more of a hormone than a vitamin. Some things I’ve read suggest 2000 mg daily as a maintenance dose. Use D3 in a gel cap form. It needs oil to work properly.
I’m really surprised my D level came back at 24 and I live in southern california (in the sun a lot)…my endo says they like to see diabetics hit 80+
wants me to start taking 4000u over the counter D3… my maxnfuze I just started couple days ago has 1000u and it’s nanotechnology so it hits the bloodstream instead of having to be digested…I did some research and asked a couple of Dr’s I know on twitter, one recommends Bio-E-Mulsion Forte (going to ask him if he buys it online or local) … my maxnfuze is a multivitamin in liquid form so I will supplement on top of that
I live in socal and I’m in the sun a lot but from what I was reading when you are overweight your body traps the vitamin D in the fat and it does not reach where it needs to be…i’ve been reading about leptin, insulin resistance (because I too have seen a dramatic increase in how much insulin i’m using) and of course this all comes down to my question of why if I’m eating 1200-1600 cal’s a day and using kettlebells the weight sticks and does not want to come off my body…so when I starting googling vitamin D function many things came up that seemed to click …I’m hoping vitamin D does the trick…new avenue to explore for me
Here are some interesting tidbits I found while browsing…

Dear Jamie.
Well if the sun does not do its job in God’s gift to mankind imagine how bad it is in our corner of Siberia. This is strange that when I was a kid her in Canada we were stuffed with cod liver oil and baked under UV lamps indoors.
Our highly paid medical geniuses ( paid more than in USA because here you need very little malpractice insurance) forgot about this for the last 40 years. Now it is back in fashion. My wife has been fed hormones, fosamax, didronel and calcium for her osteoporosis but nobody ever checked her vitamin D deficiency.
That is possibly very good news is the Vit D reduces insulin resistance. I presently need 1 unit of insulin for 2 grams of carbs an absurdly high amount. and if I up my insulin I will end up at 500 lb. I sympathize with the difficulty in loosing weight.
yes it is very scary to me because I switched from lantus (fat lantus lol) to levemir and dropped about 5-7 pounds of water weight right off the bat …which was great but now we are working on my sugars because the last 6-9 months I’ve been so outta wack…for nearly 12 years always my a1c was in the 6’s…my last a1c 8.9!..and I am having to up my insulin intake of course to knock that down which scared me on the weight gaining front because currently I need to take off about 70 pounds…I lost about 30 a couple years ago but it has come back plus some…I keep my diet in relatively good shape, I’m pretty strong with my workouts so it’s been a long frustrating road for me with weight issues …so let’s try upping vitamin D certainly can’t hurt…but insulin resistance is quite the challenge for me and getting worse regardless of avoiding carbs
Dear Jamie.
We could be twins. Same problem here. Not sure if upping insulin is a good idea. I am trying a super expensive weight loss pill called meridia which is suggested as a weight loss medication by the canadian diabetes ■■■ treatment. Only lost 2 lb so far so it is very early to tell. If one looses more than 10 lb and keeps it off you have a winner.
I told my Endo who believes I am doing great because A1c is below 7% that I did not expect to live more than 1 1/2 years as I have been gaining 10 lb per year on insulin and my friend Bob’s brother in law died at 268 lb and was the same height as I am.
The ever increasing resistance is worrisome as I now need 1 unit for ever 2 grams. and this is on a very low carb diet.
I have also switched to levemir.
Have you tried adding metformin to the insulin ? Makes me sick but some people have smashing success on it. Can be used with insulin is supposed to fight resistance.
Subjects with hypovitaminosis D had a greater prevalence of components of metabolic syndrome than did subjects without hypovitaminosis D.
The data in the present study show a positive correlation of 25(OH)D concentration with insulin sensitivity and a negative effect of hypovitaminosis D on beta-cell function. Extrapolation from the observations in the current study suggests that increasing 25(OH)D from 10 to 30 ng/ mL can improve insulin sensitivity by 60%. Subjects with hypovitaminosis D are at higher risk of insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome.
The improvement in insulin resistance by increasing 25(OH)D could potentially eliminate the burden on beta cells and reverse abnormal glucose tolerance. Furthermore, the 60% improvement in insulin sensitivity that results from vitamin D treatment indicates that the treatment is more potent than either troglitazone or metformin treatment. The most effect in individuals may translate to a dramatic effect in the population as a whole because of the high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D.
That’s why I love my endo! I was on 10,000 IU of VitD3 for 10 weeks. Going to test my levels next couple of weeks, and then if levels are satisfactory, will maintain at 1,000 IU per day. Hope this works!
US Scientists call to action on Vitamin D. These guys sound like the real deal.

Wow! Thanks for posting this Peter… hope that their voice is heard
The endos are onto it. Article from Endocrine today Jan 2009 on Vitamin D

another article that I was reading today on vitamin D I thought I would add over here
April 3 New England Journal of Medicine Reported that 50% of all patients that enter ICU had low levels of Vitamin D and may contribute to their condition.
It was anounce that the RDA for Vitamin D will be tripled . This has never happen before with any other nutrients.
I had not heard they will triple it! Wow – they only doubled folate about a decade back …
I have recently read a couple of very promising PubMEd articles on Vit D and LADA – I searched only on LADA and came across them!
I already started using 2000 IU D3 a day but may still ask the Endo for a blood level. I strongly suspect it will play into my situation. NO family history whatsoever.
Has anyone heard the pill form is less effective or absorbed than gelcaps? I heard that as rumor, on DF but question whether it came from a sales pitch initially … both are cheap enough, but I cannot find the gelcaps as easily. D3 is available as either.
I’m not an expert on which form is better, but in terms of value, I think the drops are a good value. The bottle lasts for one year-- and costs $12 currently. I put one drop in my tea each day.
This is where I ordered from. I have not had my levels re-tested. So I don’t know the actual effect.
Linda…I order the 1000 mg capsules…not really gelcaps, from Swanson. I am LADA, no family history as well, and had been pretty strictly using sunscreen for 15 years.
Hah – I just took both your advice … I ordered the “softgels,” via Amazon, from Swanson! I was looking in Amazon for the gelcaps, they are jsut called softgels by Carlson. Sigh.
I wanted the caps b/c I can put them in my pillbox ahead of time and it is one less thing …
Drops are great delievery method but you will get better results using drops sublingually . Sublingual delievery will increase obsorption. I also take Omega 3 oil at the same time since Vitamin D is oil soluble. Carlson is a very good brand.
