My worst hypo yet

One of my worst was about a year into receiving the news. I was about 22, still partying, low carbing. I had everything worked out to a science. If I was going out and drinking with my friends I would skip my nighttime lantus(I split mine between morning and night), I would have one low carb beer, and I could drink all night(rum and diet coke) and never worry about going low, I would check occasionally and my friends knew me well enough that if I passed out they would know to check my blood sugar, one was a paramedic, I never did pass out ever, was for the most part in control, never went low. Its funny because all my friends started drinking rum and diets instead of rum and coke(if that was there drink) so that no one or bartender would ever mix them up. I still had lots of fun(I don't drink anymore, but I was younger then) My blood sugar was beautiful - I was still honeymooning but I had good control. Always around 4-7mmol(68-119mg/dl). I say this because I wish I was in that good control now, but I'm working on it. Well one night my friend was house sitting a mansion, which had a pool. We did a lot of swimming, had a couple beers, some drinks, the usual. Here I should mention I would never get bad hangovers, its just something in my genes I don't know, I was always okay in the morning. So after this night of swimming, then drinking, running around. I wake up in this strange mansion without much recollection of whats going on or where I am - Just sitting on a couch. My head kills, I can barely lift it. My arm muscles hurt, I knew something wasn't right. The worst thing, I had to find my bag with my glucose meter. I knew it was upstairs but getting to it would be difficult, by this point I wasn't even sweaty I was probably so dehydrated. Since I knew something was wrong I took half a Dex, before climbing up the stairs. I get my meter and check... 2.8!(48mg/dl) I immediately take a couple Dex. Keep checking, more nervous than sick feeling. For the rest of the day my body was a mess, muscles hurt, it went back up, but slowly, I definitely did not have any glycogen in my body after that night. I was really lucky, it was an early dumb mistake, but you live and you learn.

Another time I was that low was a time when I went surfing. I was laying on the beach by myself after and felt super tired so I had a nap, then woke up freezing. Checked, this time again I was at 2.8mmol - explained the cold, because I was sweating. I wasn't as nervous that time because there were lots of people around(albiet strangers) but I just took some dex and tried to relax. Cold water does weird things to your blood sugar, and I find being cold can lower it sometimes because of all of the energy your body burns to stay warm. Just a theory of course.

Eating according to your insulin is so old fashioned. You must learn to inject insulin according to what you eat. You will be much freer!

I must admit that I never figured out this carb counting thing, insulin sensitivity etc. And I AM an engineer...

What I did was learn from trial and error how much insulin I need for the type of meal I'm going to eat.

When I eat a totally lowcarb meal (meaning the only carbs are from vegetables like cucumbers, and the protein) I know I take a minimal amount of insulin (2.5 units). Surprisingly, even a meal like that will raise my BG.

Otherwise I add more, according to how much i'll eat. Sometimes of course I need to add a correction later, if I eat more carbs than i planned. It's not a big deal -- I think I have it pretty much down pat, as my hba1c is between 5 and 5.5.

Good luck.
