New Accord trial data

all over the news today you'll find disappointing news about the hypertension and lipid arms of the notorious Accord trial.

as you remember, this trial looked at tight blood glucose and blood pressure control and the addition of a lipid lowering agent (fenofibrate) to a statin (ie simvastatin). the tight glucose arm was terminated prematurely because of higher mortality in the intesive treatment arm.

the news reports are as usual irresponsible and may lead patient and physicians to neglect blood pressure control as they did with the glucose arm news.. there are some good news in this study and you have to read it carefully as some subgroups did benefit from intensive control. i strongly believe the the choice of meds used to treat blood pressure in diabetics is as important as the control achieved and this may affect outcomes.

i will be happy to discuss the detail if anyone is interested.
