Non-diabetic doctor and dietitian comment on their CGM use

I am a vegan that eats fats when I want. @Marilyn6 is a lot more insulin sensitive because of her low fat approach. I certainly notice a difference in how much I have to figure out a different insulin use when I consume even one dish higher fat. It makes a difference on timing and of course how much insulin too.

But days in a row of eating salads and veggie bowls (fairly lower fat but I eat lots of tofu and avocado and use dressing made with vegan mayo) and then say I make a fake chicken salad which has a lot of vegan mayo in it and bam, immediately more of a difference in needs of insulin. I go back to ā€œmy normalā€ pretty quickly, usually by the next day.

I have done well in that I have a 5.1% A1C and am TIR of 98-99% between 65-160. And a TIR of 94% between 65-140.

The meat industry is very inhumane and I became a vegetarian when I was 11 because of that. There was no way I was going to change that because of diabetes. Diabetes was not going to control my choice of eating and being a vegan, diabetes was going to be made to work around my choice of what was important to me.

I eat a lot of potatoes, rice, lentils, beans, and quinoa. I wouldn’t like to eat days on end of veggie bowls and salads either. I also eat oats groats, Vegetables and fruit.

Lol…I don’t mind the veggie bowls, I love veggie bowls and to me veggie bowls are a staple base. I put different things with them…tofu, beans, seitan, tempeh or fake meats and then I add Braggs aminos, gravy, fake cheese, cashews, parmegan sprinkle, etc to change it up. And stir fries too. I love them because they are easy and can be changed in flavors easily. I eat other things when I feel like it. From pizza to sandwiches lol. Fruit is an everyday given.

But a bag of a mixed frozen veggies blend, add a protein, add a flavor and I can have a tasteful meal in about 15 minutes.

Do you run into issues immediately if you can’t exercise after breakfast and lunch?

I try to exercise within about 45 minutes after eating. If I know that I am not going to exercise, I just give myself a little more insulin. I used to not be so particular about exercising soon after eating, and just exercised when I got around to it which worked, but this keeps me more flatlined. I don’t have to exercise after dinner, because I am more sensitive to insulin after dinner.

Wow, that is lucky! After dinner is my worst time. It is also the time when I feel like a snack and the current goto snack is mixed nuts. You mentioned that you will eat walnuts. What about mixed nuts? I’ve noticed when I have 6 oz of nuts that I will slowly spike in the middle of the night, and it will even effect me the next day, as if it is still in my system! For example, normally I need to eat 21g-42g+ carbs for a run, but if I eat nuts the previous night, I might not need any carbs during a run! I think this reaction is related to the fats in nuts. Perhaps I need to eliminate them from my diet, though I do love them!

I only eat about 1 1/2 walnuts daily, and that is it for nuts. Too much fat for the way I eat. I love nuts too, and ate plenty of them when I was a very low carber. In my 61 yrs of living with this illness, I have eaten every way possible. The way I am eating now just really works for me. I am satisfied most of the time.

I can’t really remember how I reacted to nuts and nut butters when I ate them. I ate low carb for 11 yrs, and was gaining weight on the diet towards the end. My A1c is about the same, but my glucose level is more flatlined now. I pay more attention to keeping my levels between 60 and 130 than I ever have,
