Omnipod (New Version) Failures

I agree however, I have knocked off my old pods, especially on the arm, easy to bump them into a door which would be me being clumsy. I would not expect replacement if I knocked it loose. I try and be careful not to but it has happened with the older big pods.

I think it kind of depends on the situation. I was getting repeated failures from the same lot. If you have like 1 in 30 fail they may not replace them, however, since they are expensive I think they should replace all that fail. Just my opinion

Problem seems to have gone away when I started using the new box. There are other variables such as handling when being shipped (Box dropped and one box get more severe jolting and such due to its position in shipment) I know they do not handle dropping them as I had failures with old ones that fell off my lap when being set up. I learned quickly they have to be handled with care. Thanks for your concern though. Glad to have such a great support line.

I received 1 replacement pod with a 9-2013 manufacture date. It looks like they tweaked the syringe. It can't be pulled back beyond 200 units, and the line is at 200. They must be paying attention. :-)

Thanks for posting this!

I have a terrible rate of pod failures in the last 2. Most of them failed at the very end of bolus with .05 units remaining for bolus. Looks like few people have the same issue based on my google search. Awaiting 10 replacement pods for failures and 14 more replacements for unused ones. Lot no is the same for all pods L40425. Based on google search Lot nos starting with 404 seems to have more failures. I rarely had failures with the old style pods and I am currently using my left over old pods. Insulet is sending my 24 replacements overnight.

Ha, good luck. They told me they were sending my 16 replacements overnight, I got 2 pods a week later and no return envelope for the failed pods. Many of mine, including the last one failed at the end of a bolus, same as you, with .05 remaining. Lot #40420. Thankfully I only have 4 left in this batch. I think only about 30% of the 3 boxes actually lasted the whole 80 hrs. I am going to ask them about my 14, now 15 replacements still expected when I report this latest failure. Hope you get all your pods as promised but don't be surprised if you don't.

They agreed to replace unused ones? Do you order your pods directly from Insulet?

My pods were sent as promised, but of all of the boxes originally sent were from that same lot number. I am currently using from the new box and have had two fail out of 3 used. My fear is that when this lot is used up the old lot (my original order) is going to start failing again. But I don;'t know what to do about it. Maybe I will get some new ones in the meantime. I can't say why but my experience with Insulet has been very positive. Sorry you have not had a good experience. I can't imagine using another type of pump with all the tubing that comes with that. I just hope and pray things will improve as I really like my Omnipod and the freedom it gives me.

I use a third party company, for my normal orders. Insulet has replaced the pods directly, but only when approved by their customer service. I sent a few of my last old ones that had failed, along with the PDM that failed when I first got my new model but they did not replace them. But they had not agreed to either. So I think you must go through customer service first to get any results. I felt they were concerned and that I was treated well.

My lot number was L40454. I am glad to hear you are getting replacements. I also rarely had a failure with the old pods. That is why I started this thread to see if it was just me or my pods or if others have had problems. I am really pleased to have the community of support and for all the replies. I don't know any other Omnipod users among the Diabetics I know personally, so it is a wonderful thing to be able to speak to others with similar problems and concerns.

The replacement box that I got still has the syringes that go beyond 200. It is good to know that they are improving and maybe solving the problems! Thank You for the post.

I got all replacement pods yesterday from Insulet. I order my supplies through edgepark but contact Insulet for pod issues. In the case of replacing unused pods, I specifically asked Insulet to replace them because of the rate of failures with that lot. Moreover I think there are well aware of the .05 failure and other pod alarms and didn’t give me any hard time with the whole process. Will try the replacement ones tomorrow and see how it goes.
I agree…this is a wonderful community to share and support without which it will be very difficult to get though these issue.

My problem lot number was L40419. These had many pod errors and bad 1st days (and because of all of the errors, that was most days) My replacement pods are perfect!!! Insulet said that they will replace my unused pods! Yea!

Excellent. I am going to try the new one in few hours. The replacement ones have lot number starting with 406. Hopefully I will have better luck with those.

I have one pod left in the last batch of 30 I received. I fill the pods with 160 units of Humalog. I refrigerate the insulin but I warm it up to palm temperature before filling the pod. For the record, I do read and follow directions. :-)

My failure rate with the old /original pod design was very low. 1 or 2 out of thirty pods was the worst it got. I often had no issues with all thirty pods.

My failure rate with the new design, most 19-XXXX-XXX failures, is 9 out of 29 pods. This is 31% failure rate. I've had priming failures but most failures occur after the first 24 hours. Today's first pod failed during its breakfast bolus 3 minutes after it had been applied. Today's second pod half clicked when it tried to insert the cannula. (The indicator on the back of the pod claimed success.) I wasn't sure if it had inserted but decided to give it a chance. About two minutes later it clicked and I felt the cannula insert, the hollow needle pierce and retract. It has been working fine since breakfast.

I like the new pod. It is smaller and seems to stay on my bod much better. I took a pod apart. Its internal design is much different. Tolerances have to be much closer. This makes the manufacturing process tougher.

Does anyone know how the success::failure ratio of the new design compares to the older design? Individual experiences provide clues but a large, measured user population is needed to get an accurate picture.

Customer service has been excellent. I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about them.

I think you bring up several good points. I think that the design info on the differences is probably proprietary information, however, as a retired Engineer I think it would be interesting to know. I am doing so much better with the new batch they sent me. I have not had a failure with them, 3 out of 3 so far. I have taken to documenting on each pod how it performs, and the date of change with a permanent marker. If it fails I document that on the pod. One such note is a failure to give the 2 beeps after filling. That way if I have to send it in they know what happened to each one, in theory anyway. Thanks for the feedback!

Great news! I am also doing great with the new replacement pods. I have 3 boxes of the old lot number I am going to call them and see if they will replace them so I may not have to go through the frustration of multiple pod failures.

I have had a lot of pods fail since they made the new one, so what I do is take the insulin out of the old pod and put it in the new pod to save insulin and I haven't had any problems with that. And if you are having a lot of pod failures, keep those pods and call them in for replacements and let them know how many problems you are having with the pods. I hope this helps:)

I've had a failure rate above 50% since the upgrade. I just got off the phone with Insulet to replace 10 pods. beyond frustrating to have this happening. My initial two years wearing the pod I had maybe 3 failures...since the upgrade I've had 20+.

A quick tip for making replacing them less painful is to write a few details on the back of the pods when they do fail...date/time, where you were wearing the pod, how did it fail (during bolus/basal/activation). I did not do this for the first set I had to replace but did so with the set replaced today and it dramatically cut the amount of time it took with the Insulet cust service rep.
