This maybe a stupid question as I haven’t went through my training or anything, but I have read through the book and I can’t find the answer. It says your basal rate starts at midnight. So I want to start my pump earlier than that. So do you set up a temporary basal rate to cover you until your basal rate kicks in at midnight? Another question would be how do you start you basal rate after you have changed your infusion settings? Does it automatically start back up where it left off or do you figure up what your basal settings need to be in the time between you change it and midnight to reset it?
Cody the settings start at 12:00 a.m., but then you set them up for a 24 hour period, meaning you can set one for 24 hours or program your settings for a 24 hour period that you never have to change. I have different ones programmed that with different rates throughout the day that I have set up and leave, hope I am making sense as I am having a low as I type
I use a 722, but the overall use is the same between the 5XX and 7XX series of Minimed pumps…
(1) So do you set up a temporary basal rate to cover you until your basal rate kicks in at midnight?
No, what that means is that in looking at your basal settings for the day, the first setting that is available is 12 Midnight. You can set that basal to be as long as you want… the whole 24 hours, 2 hours, 5 hours, etc. Then, your next basal goes after whatever you set, and on and on. Here are my settings – I have four – for an example:
- 12:00A 1.00 U/H (goes from 12 midnight - 3:30 AM)
- 03:30 A 1.10 U/H (goes from 3:30 AM - 6:00 AM)
- 06:00 A 1.00 U/H (goes from 6 AM - 6 PM)
- 06:00 P 0.90 U/H (goes from 6 PM - 12 midnight)
(2) Another question would be how do you start you basal rate after you have changed your infusion settings? Does it automatically start back up where it left off or do you figure up what your basal settings need to be in the time between you change it and midnight to reset it?
Basically, your pump is running all the time. After changing the reservoir, priming the pump, setting the new infusion set, and fixed priming, the pump resumes the basal setting, based upon the time of the day versus your basal settings. So, using my numbers above, if I change my site anytime after 6:00 PM, the pump will automatically deliver the 0.90 U/H after I have changed and reattached the pump. There is no turning it on, turning it off… unless you actually use the “suspend” feature, which really isn’t necessary when making a site change. It’s easiest to disconnect, then go through the rewind and priming steps with the new set.
Hope that helps.
After Shawn’s great response I should go back and delete mine.
