I think it's likely that a percentage of non D people do spike more after a high carb meal, however they all go back to 80's to 90's at about 2 hours after a meal and most don't go above 140, 120 seems to be the norm. The person doing this test apparently only used cgm and he didn't say what his bg was 2 hours after his meals. He should have been doing finger sticks also to see what was really going on.
and who knows, maybe that very small percentage of those who are spiking into the 200's after meals (even if it is for a short amount of time) are or will slowly turn into pre-diabetic type 2's. so, who knows?
yes I agree.. my brother spiked to 160 after popcorn and I'm worried he is preD. he always went back to 90's to 80's though.
Personally, I've seen numbers all over the map post-meal. Between meals and fasting, they are pretty stable. That's not really how sicence is done though.
Like I said before though, I'm in agreement with the good doctor. I get his point.
During my shipboard medical person in charge training we tested random people in the class shortly after they drank a large “rock star” energy drink. They were all over 200. The likelihood that they all just happened to be diabetic and didn’t know it is pretty slim.
@ Sarah Isn't that what the doctor did? He is not a diabetic, and he has published his results. I can't afford to go around testing people, and I would never ask someone I love to slap on a CGM...that is what research is for.
If a family member, friend, partner or whomever, etc wishes to become an experiment, it won't be because I asked them too. I know how it feels to test glucose and would not do that to a loved one.
@ FHS I am also in agreement with the doc, and get his point.
Granted, presumably none of them stayed anywhere near that high for very long, but the notion that natural insulin can inststantly cut off skyrocketing blood glucose from a heavy carb dose just doesn’t even make sense. It’s a physiological process that takes some time no matter how healthy the individual is.
Good point, Scott, about the long time before you were diagnosed. I only remained misdiagnosed for one week, although I was in much more critical condition than you. But a long period of misdiagnosis (as Type 2 when the person is actually Type 1) can lead to early complications, so being vigilant is good. Nel and I were both put on insulin fairly early in the process, and between us I think we have more than 50 years of Type 1 diabetes without complications--I don't want to stress about my situation, but I also am always tweaking my routine, trying to get the best control possible with imperfect technology.
I don't take my diabetes lightly either, never have ...and spend a lot of time managing... trying not to stress .MHO there is a difference between managing and stressing
that's what I got from his comment too !
lol… I agree about the testing, and I went and bought my own meter and strips when I was having hypoglycemia long before my D. I wish I had been testing myself also before DKA because none of that would ever have happened. After my diagnosis I tested my father and brother and my cats now too. I told one of my hospital cell mates to do this and I tell lots of other people too. This is an easy way for us to see what is going on and to diagnose ourselves long before the docs ever will. I'm glad we have it available without rx etc.
oh, sorry for you...any one of my family members, etc...typically ask me to test their blood sugars, scared to death they're going to end up type 1 and reassured beyond belief that their BG's are perfect. An experiment, testing a blood sugar..hardly, it's done every day at frickin walmart, or safeway for pete's sake. you know how it feels, i don't even feel it, it's not like they're getting a pint of blood taken from them, crackin up. my husband would slap on a cgm in a minute if i would let him, he lives this right along with me. can't afford it, it costs, what...$1 a strip. IDK, giving me and/or my family or whomever close to me peace of mind, priceless. type 1 came out of the blue for me, no one in my family ever on either side has or had any form of diabetes..ever. they're worried for me, of course, they love me, and for themselves to. if they ask me to test their blood sugars, i'm testing their blood sugars, period! friends too, crap it's a frickin finger pinch, if that. if you don't want to do it, don't. my response wasn't directed at you, i don't even know who 'you' are. So, should I publish my results too then because i've seen differently, there..right in plain view, in front of my eyes, nothing above 120's from non-diabetics.
i know, right. i had dinner w/a friend last week, she's a nurse and asked me to test, she was 70...70 for pete's sake after a meal. 'A.MA.ZING', i thought to myself, it makes me happy that's she's safe in that regards but almost, IDK, left me speechless, ya know. are animals supposed to have the same normal range blood sugars as we humans? i wonder, can animals get type 1?
70, omg… I used to be like that, I always had lower bg but I was always in the 80's usually when venous tests were done. I had some 60's. Yes animals have the same range as we do, but cats due to tremendous stress hormones for fighting can go from normal to very high bg very quickly and be ok. I was surprised that cats have the same range because their metabolism is so different overall than ours is. I was wondering that too, I haven't read enough to know but I think what cats get is more like type 2 maybe? I will research it a bit more.
I do know in cats and dogs diabetes is usually caused by eating grains though, they're not supposed to eat them at all.
Wow - his statement borders on the irresponsible. Large blood sugar swings, regardless for diabetics or non-diabetics should be avoided as much as possible. This can also lead to organ damage and heart disease, just like sustained high-blood sugar levels, the latter of which is only a risk for diabetics, of course. If I were a non-diabetic hitting those numbers knowing what I know now, I'd just avoid foods that cause me to spike like that.

Say WHAT???
