Recovery BG increases

Having an odd one at the moment, which I am blaming squarely on my bike ride recently (1000 miler over 10 days with final day being a 158 miler). Anyhow, now back at work and pumps back on its "normal" pattern settings, but my issue is my BG has gone through the roof. So much so to keep it at reasonable levels I've now increased it by over double the amount I normally have as my basal doses. Bolus seems fine, but the basal is increased massively to keep my levels stable.

The amount of extra basal I am now taking is the equivalent over 130g of carbs per day over my normal dose. So the question is, where is this BG increase coming from? am pretty sure it's not the liver as it's not it's usual trick. And my assumption is it's some kind of breakdown of the muscles I gained on the ride, but would that occur so fast? and would it cause such a massive BG increase? It's not causing a problem (now) that I have the basal at a level to cope with it, but it is curious as to where it's coming from which I haven't seen before, so anyone know where? or how long this is expected to last maybe?

Is it possible that the extreme endurance exercise has caused damage and inflammation? It may take weeks to fully recover.

I have no idea. I run like 20 miles/ week most of the time and will ramp it up to 30-40 miles with a race on the horizon but I have no clue about 1000 miles in 10 days. I'd doubt the liver too, maybe it's some sort of exercise deficit depending on what you're doing now. Reaction to inflammation if you trash yourself doing it, like Brian suggests, also sounds like a reasonable theory and I agree that a week or two may not be unreasonable to have to wait to get back.

"Morituri te salutant!"

Got an appointment with the endo and team there in a couple of weeks so will ask there. Inflammation wise, not sure. I had a sore right knee for a couple of days, but that's gone now. And got the scrapes from the accident but that's all very minor. Am back on the bike but that's just doing daily commutes currently of a little over 10 miles mostly due to bad weather, and me being nervous a little as the bike feels awfully twitchy and nothing like it did with all the bags now taken off (no surprise there though).

Some kind of exercise deficit seems likely as I think the body was adapting pretty well to banging in the miles. Actually feel I could of just kept on going by the end really but will leave that for next time ;) My normal basal is 11u a day, and it's currently at 27u which is an immense step up really. Bolus is fine it seems and is working as intended so food intake doesn't seem to be playing a part. My concern is sooner or later this will all twang back into normal mode and I'll have an immense amount of insulin in my system to deal with, but am testing like a silly thing at the moment since the CGM has gone back and using just finger tests now. One day I had some really interesting figures with the CGM and finger BG where I had almost depleted the glucose in the interstitial tissue the CGM was reading (26) while running almost neat off what was in my blood which was in the 160's for a couple of hours. Ok that's also a Medtronic CGM being as accurate as ever, but I had managed to empty my reserves it seemed. But that was with a few days to go, and following days seemed to be back to normal with the delay between the two and results being closer.

But guess this is what I get for doing crazy things :P wonder if the boss will allow me to have afternoons off to bang in a hundred miles to get my levels back :P
