Summer!

Today, I was accepted as an undergraduate researcher into a biology lab. I’m so excited to begin my work at the lab for a variety of reasons–obviously, my career goals are research-oriented so this is a great first step for me to take in solidifying my graduate school resume. The work I will be primarily doing related to Drosophila, a species of fruit fly that serves as a model organism for a lot of studies that can be applied to other similar organisms. It involves looking at the different colorations of the flies and determining what gene is responsible, as well as what causes the difference in appearance. The professor seems like a great guy, genuinely excited to get some fresh eyes on the research he’s working on, and it’s a lot of hands-on work including data analysis. I’m really excited!

It’s officially one month until the spring semester ends and I can begin summer. I am living on campus this summer, not taking classes, but working two jobs in addition to this research position in order to pay my rent, feed myself, save up for a new laptop/books for the fall, etc. I’m working some hours at the campus computer labs over the summer, and I have an interview with CVS Pharmacy today for a potential job so hopefully that will go well. It’s gonna be a lot of work, but definitely worth it. Hopefully keeping myself busy will help me shed my senior seventeen that I put on this year and help me control my sugars once I get my pump.

Most of my housemates are staying in Pittsburgh for the summer as well, so perhaps I can pencil them in for a little bit of fun.

I also scheduled my classes for the fall semester and I’m excited to learn some really interesting stuff despite my roommate (accurately) referring to my courseload as “godawful”.
