Hello everyone! My name is Sydnee Smith and I am from Pocatello, Idaho. I am 21 years old and I have had Type One Diabetes for 8 years. I was diagnosed at the age of 12 on December 28, 2005, and that day changed my life forever. For the first year being diabetic I had a very hard time telling people and always felt like I had to hide this huge part of me. That was until I started attending Camp Hodia. My first summer at Teen Camp as a camper I was hooked. I graduated camp the summer of 2010 and I’ve been a counselor ever since. Hodia has given me such a different outlook on diabetes and who I want to be with diabetes. I’m not “Diabetic Sydnee” I’m Sydnee Smith and yes I do have diabetes but I refuse to let it stop me. Some of my very best friends I met because I have diabetes and for that I would never change that part of me. I’m just like every other diabetic I have my ups and my downs but because of those ups and downs I am so much stronger as a person and as a diabetic. I know I will never be alone with my diabetes and that is all thanks to Hodia and the diabesties I’ve made along the way. That first summer at Hodia changed me and I owe it all to my friends and counselors that summer. I hope one day I can change a child’s life just like they changed mine. I want to make a difference with diabetes.
