Dinner is less forgiving for us too. I’d rather have chinese for lunch than dinner anyday, lol. Do you think your son has fat spikes? I know you mentioned high carb meals, but start tracking whether these problem meals are also high in fat and protein as well. Also, how are you timing your shots? Are you giving them right as his dinner plate is given to him or 20 minutes before he gets his plate? If we are having a difficult meal I have to remind myself to have her bolus 20 minutes ahead of time - it sounds easy but I do forget sometimes because 20 minutes before a meal I’m dealing with 2 younger kids continually telling me they are starving and I’m trying to finish cooking and my teen is hiding upstairs with headphones on and can’t hear me, LOL. What I’m trying to say is - I understand how hard this is…hang in there.
Yes you do understand lol the only thing we can do is hang in there . Earphones here too ,yes Imeant to say high carb/fat meals really anytime we go out to eat . He set alarms on his Ipod so I would be quiet . LOL so maybe that will help !
Hi Tyler’s Mom, Here is what I can add that helped me. This advice is dependent on your son’s behaviours and matureness and how long he has been T1. My mom was an RN and was a great help to my diabetes management growing up. At about 14ish she realized that I would soon be grown up, out on my own and have to handle D all by my self. She had me sit through all those nutrition, dieatitic, carb counting, insulin dosing classes, etc. again. Before I went to the classes she expressed to me the importance of listening because I would be taking over more control of my Diabetes. She also added in College I would be on my own and have to do it mostly by myself. She was always there for help, but slowly stepped back and let me take the reigns. It worked well for me and certainly helped transition to college.
I think the classes, while they will likely bore him to death, will assure you that he knows all that he can know about D managemnent. Then hopefully you can be there for help and support.
THanks Capin101 ,He pretty much does everything his self most of the time . He will just say I forgot to eat my snack or how much did I take I forgot to write it down . He does have a little ADD to go along with his diabetes .
He was diagnosed July 3,2006 and he does very well I think he is kinda going through the I wish I didnt have diabetes stage . We went to the doctor in Dec and his A1C was 6.1 which is pretty darn good !!!
Thanks for the info
