I can’t believe having a syringe on hand or depicting one can get so blown out of proportion. A syringe is so taboo. In our cases such a device has played a huge part in our survival. I get frustrated at having to explain myself. My question is: where are all the diabetics? It’s sad that I get more responses from illicit drug users than the people who are in my heart. I guess it’s a risk I take with doing public art. Last year I had my ear plug stretched to the gage where I could wear a syringe through it. Sometimes instead of it being a point of pride it is turned to shame. Last year I was a passenger in my sister’s car when this policeman stopped us to talk about how I had been taking pictures in a “high risk” area. He said I could be charged with having drug paraphernalia for wearing a syringe through my ear. It made me want to pull the syringe out, put the cap on and snap its head off. Syringes come with persecution.
