Too many "shoulds"

An awesome campaign from REI about the stigmatized “shoulds” forced upon women. What “shoulds” (or shouldn’ts) get placed upon us PWDs? Shout 'em out…

Here’s mine: “You shouldn’t feel tired”.

Every person with diabetes should reach for better blood sugar numbers.

You should have figured out how to control your diabetes by now

“You should get your A1c down” – says my endo, who never tells me how one does that. (Though I’m grateful to his team of CDE nurses for their depths of knowledge.)

Excuse me! But to what should you be compliant?

I;m tired of being told I should eat to harm myself, lots of carbs to give me energy and high blood sugars.

You should be glad it’s not cancer.

And, closely related:

You should be glad you don’t have the bad kind.

You should have access to CGMs and Pumps regardless of D-type at little or no cost such as a pharmacy deductible and not be pigeon-holed into ineffective treatments because you are diagnosed as Type “x, y, or z”.

You should stop listening to doctors (and others) that talk like that and think of manageable, positive actions to take - one at a time!
