Type 1 Diabetes and Heart Health

Joslin medalists are type 1 diabetics who have lived with type 1 for at least 50 years. The Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston awards medals to these diabetics when they apply and show proof of their date of diagnosis. The Joslin Medalists Study has examined more than 900 medalists and many interesting things have been found.

At a medalist meeting in 2011, Dr King, head of the Joslin Medalist Study, told us that there is a special "inner protection" that many of us have. It protects us against serious problems with our eyes, kidneys and nervous system. Then he added that it does NOT protect our hearts. In the Facebook Joslin medalists group, many members have posted that they have had heart attacks, bypass surgeries, stents, etc, but they do not have any serious problems with their eyes and kidneys.

My eyes, kidneys, and heart are all in great shape after 68 years of type 1, but there is no guarantee that it will continue that way. How is YOUR heart health?
