Yes, that did tip him off. He and his Dr. went over everything thoroughly. Even the 7 day use of the CGM gave no explanation. The Dr. actually dxd. him as a Brittle Diabetic which is still controversial, at Best. It wasn’t until the Dr. saw the dents. Then he knew, bad absorption.
Good to hear it Jason. I didn’t get the dents for the first almost 40 years. And I didn’t know what it was when it did happen. I had never heard of it. I mean, we were told to rotate shots when we were Kids but they forgot to tell us what would happen if we didn’t. I hate when they do that.
This is a subject that should be studied a lot more because it can be devastating and dangerous.
I had just got a bit of fluffy fat on my lower tummy. I mentioned to my Hubby that it must be middle age spread. So I continued injecting there. One morning I woke up and the fluffy fat was almost totally gone right across. Really weird. Thankfully, my tummy looks normal again except in the one spot. It has been about 6 years. I see a vague bit of new layers but don’t think that I will ever be able to give a shot there since it’s just a thin layer of skin over a small cord and a vein. Whereas, Mandy’s is just bone. I do hope that hers fills out.
I think there is a lot more to this condition than we know. It may even be more of an attack of our immune system on the tissue where it may only affect some Diabetics. Who knows? Just take precautions. I hope it doesn’t happen to you…or any one else. I gotta say, this has been one interesting disease/condition.
I am dealing with the exact same thing right now. Mine is under my bellow button. I have never injected in that spot but I have used a pump and injected in the area. I am freaking out. I have been to three doctors--my primary care physician, my endo and a dermatology nurse practicand they are all completely clueless. If you have any info please let me know. I know this post is a few years old, but I thought I would reply to it anyway. Thanks so much!!
I guess that I'm the first one back , of the original posters. So I will reply for now.
As you know, we are not Drs. and can't dxd anyone, just give suggestions, advice and give examples by word and/or photos of our experiences. I for one cannot confirm that your spot/dent is Lipoatrophy since I can't see it. It may or may not be. Your Endo and maybe your Dermatologist Nurse should recognize it when they see it.
Now I wish that I had taken photos to document the dents that I had on my arms and tummy but alas, I did not. Believe it or not, I hadn't looked at my worst dent on my tummy for about 2 years now. Since I noticed this discussion again, I did. To my surprise and delight I'm noticing that the largest dent is continuing to fill in slow but sure, with microfine flesh/skin. I'm thrilled. :) I didn't think it would. It has been about 9 years now for that spot. All the smaller dents were filled in within about 8 months. My Endos and mainly my Hubby are my only witnesses to all of my battle scars and other happenings from start to finish.
I am not a pumper(by choice), I still use Humalog Insulin, I never used long-acting Insulins in my tummy area, I haven't used the glass/steel syringes since the 1970 somethings, I have had Type 1 for soon to be 50 years. I still have plenty of places to inject, some of the places never used for injections before. I have never had the Lipohypertrophy that were lumps or bumps but I did have the Lipohypertrophy build up of soft, fluffy fat right across my lower tummy area from over-injecting. I kept injecting in my lower tummy because I thought it was "middle-aged spread" fat. Then that tummy fat almost all disappeared and left dents. Other PWD have or might possibly have a somewhat different experience concerning Lipoatrophy by Diabetes.
I have typed this as clearly as I can. I hope that you can understand it . If you think that you have Lipoatrophy by Diabetes, then please do not continue injecting or placing the insets in or near that area until it heals. Having your sugars in decent control will help a lot also, I'm sure. Any more questions? Do ask. Good Luck! :)
