I switched to Firefox for my Course Management System, because I was told it worked better for that, but just kept IE for everything else out of habit. Then today I realized how much easier it would be just to switch between tabs in Firefox so I am shifting all my bookmarks over. I just wanted to tell you how much easier it is for TuD! I was complaining awhile back about how much I hated to scroll down through the “featured discussions” each and every time I went to Forum page, or even returned to it from reading a thread. Well guess what? With Firefox it automatically returns me to the place on the page of the last thread I’d been reading; no need to scroll! Also with IE I hated typing messages to people because my words would disappear behind the information/ads on the right and I couldn’t see what I was typing. With Firefox they don’t do that!
Yeah, I know you are all probably using Chrome or Linox (sp?) or some other superior thing I’ve never heard of…but just for any of you less tech savvy people that just landed in IE years ago and never thought to switch I just wanted to share my preference for Firefox for TuD (and in general).
I know this isn’t a General Diabetes topic, but I figured only the techno geeks (who definitely don’t need my advice) read the Tech Issues section!
I had to switch over because you couldn’t send PMs or upload pics in TuD with IE9. I was still using it for some other stuff, but I was having too many problems. I got to the point I only opened IE because all my bookmarks were there - I didn’t do the import at first and kept meaning to. My computer crashed on Tues and since I have to start from square one with bookmarks, I am only adding them in Firefox. I kept IE for the same reason you did - out of habit.
Another thing FireFox has is a spell checker, absolutely essential for some of us :) Your misspelled words are underlined in red, if you right click on the word in question you will be offered choices to fix the problem.
If you set up a Sync account, which is a feature built into the latest versions, your bookmarks are stored in the cloud. If you want to use your bookmarks on another computer or other device you can log into your account and upload them. This is also good insurance against losing your bookmarks if your computer dies.
Thanks for the info about the Sync account Badmoon. Windows 7 has a built in feature that asks if you want to back up before doing the system restore. I did that but 2 of my DVDs had scratches on so I lost a lot of stuff. My bookmarks was one of the things lost.
When you start talking about the cloud you have definitely surpassed my technical ability (and interest!) but I think this is a useful discussion!
Kelly, I have been slowly moving over the bookmarks I use most frequently but I have a LOT I use once in awhile. Is there a way to import them all in one fell swoop? Can you explain how?
I had a ton that I only used once in awhile also - mine were all grouped. I thought it asked me when I set it up if I wanted to import and I said no, but here is a link to a Firefox help article how to do it.
The cloud is just another computer on the internet. Since it’s independent from any of your devices it’s an ideal place to backup and restore.
You can import your bookmarks from IE by choosing File --> Import from the drop down menu. If the drop down menu is not showing right click somewhere in the top section and select menu bar.
