I’ve had my MM CGM for about 8 weeks now but I have noticed that I picked up 5-7 pounds on the scales. Anyone else notice weight change? I am assuming the reason is better control of my glucose levels.
It did not cause me to gain any weight. The CGM has no calories.
have you noticed a change in your eating habits? do you think you’re eating more because you feel you have more room to eat what you want when you are wearing a sensor that tells you when your BG is going up/down? Maybe that’s the reason… I don’t know, I didn’t notice any weight gain with my CGM. LOL @ “no calories” comment!!
Hi Tim, it could be you’re holding on to more calories as result of better control. Or perhaps you’re more aware of pending lows now with CGM, covering for them, then doing correction boluses if your glucose levels elevate too much as a result.
Have you been leveraging CGM data to adjust your basal rates and pre-meal boluses - to flatten out your glucose levels?
Though not weight gain, I have had a slight increase in my last two A1C results. Though my doctor didn’t want to hear me kvetch about the higher number since it is still under 7, she did agree that it makes sense since I have so significantly reduced my hypoglycemic excursions. The flip side, reducing extreme hyperglycemic ones, has left me with more frequent higher-than-normal numbers for chunks of the day. Now I’m working on reducing those higher-than-normals.
I can’t point to a direct relationship between my result and your weight gain, I wonder if there may be something to reduction of physical stress (high/low/high/low) and easing of your metabolism? Mere speculation on my part - thoughts?
Stress certainly effects blood sugar control, I have to deal with it all the time in my over-stressful job and life. Regular excercise helps offset stress considerably!
I agree with you that you have gained weight due to better control. When your blood sugars are elevated, you spill the calories which you eat, in your urine. In other words, you are in a state of ketoacidosis at blood sugar levels of 160 or higher. Protein spills in your urine. This is where the complication with kidney’s may come in. That is why most Type 1 diabetics lose weight when there blood sugars are elevated. I am sure when you got on the pump and your blood sugars became lower, you notice this weight gain, as well. I definitely think tighter control has caused your weight gain, as it did with me. But, after a while, it leveled off. Just make sure that you are not increasing your caloric intake, as well, because you are monitoring. I noticed some of the others suggested this, as well.
