What is one thing your glad your government does for diabetics?

Thats great

Everything that they provide for us diabetics and pray that the new government keep it the way it is.

Same here  Our PM just got booted out and now the Deputy is taking over

I wish I can say something that I am glad my government (Philippines) does for diabetics…even just one…sigh. No national healthcare, no public info campaigns, very limited charity assistance for diabetics who cannot afford medicines, diabetes supplies and medical assistance, very limited financial allotment for these kinds of illnesses…health in general is not the government priority. Mortality for diabetics and complications are very high (Especially for the youth Type 1)… There are a few private organizations and charitable institutions that are trying to help. So far, diabetes supplies, meds, professional medical help are always available to those who can afford and who’s employers offer health insurances. There is always the hope that in time…things will change.

I hope it does change! . Fingers crossed

Everything crossed…=)

Cool Brent! Doubtful he will actually read it but go ahead. I am sure he gets plenty of the letters like that. What we need is a President with health problems who has at least once in his/her lilfe been on the dole and knows how hard it is to be without medical care and insurance. THAN there might be some changes. It is seems like unless you have experience it yourself, you can always empathize.

No offense taken. Please go and hate the US. Most of here in the US do right now.

Yeah, haven’t you heard? Did you miss your complimentary kick in the butt?

I am thankful for at least some protection udner the law so that I can’t be terminated or refused work because of my health status

Same here. I love the clause under our Disability Discrimination Act… Oh i love reading that to employers

I’m grateful that the healthcare system in France considers diabetes to be an ALD ie a condition of long duration so all supplies, doctors visits, tests to do with diabetes, ā€˜therapeutic education’ are reimbused in full (except for a token 1e for doc visits and 50c for prescription items)
Having said that in my place of origin , the UK it would also be all be exempt from charges… though I think I might not have the pump there.

I would love having to pay nothing. But its still good that we only have to pay approx $20 AU a month for my D stuff.

This was my question!!

The US does nothing, although discrimination because of diabetes is illegal. But when you get down to it, I’d rather have some more help paying for the stuff which keeps me alive. I’ve never understood the way the US gov’t thinks about issues. We’re as backwards as they come sometimes

It is all a big money machine here in the US. Lots of people die every year just because they have no medical insurance and can’t get the care they need. And why should the government care? If those people die, they save money.

Unfortunately you cant always prove that they are discrimationing agaisnt you because of D. Right now, they still have that option of rejecting you because of preexisting condition and countless people who are insured often get their insurances cancel once they get really sick (yeah, isn’t it backwards? Is THAT why I need insurance?). Hopefully maybe with the health care reform at least they can’t turn you down for preexisting conditions - but I am not holding breathe to see if these changes will really cover ALL the gaps in the US health system. I am sure the insurance companies with find holes to get around stuff. They are as bad as the credit card companies.

I live in the US as well and i cant think of much the government does although i am sure there is some tax payer dollars being spent on research. Fortunately i have wonderful insurance but for those in our country that do not, i cant imagine.

It can vary state to state though too. My mother lives in Oregon and between her Medicare (Federal) and Oregon Health Care system, here supplies are practically free. Again though, exception not the norm.

I’m not thankful for anything the government does re Diabetes, because it’s mostly nothing…! and Australia is getting ready to pass legislation greatly restricting diabetics, bundling them together in one group apart from everyone else’s coverage, and greatly limiting what they cover… So don’t hold your breath. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/jun2010/diab-j23.shtml

This won’t be happening… That PM just got kicked out… And the new PM is not willing to get rid of anything from the Health System… Only add

Uh… erm… eh… i’ll get back to you on that when i leave the US…
